NEW YORK: Banco ABC Brasil, the Sao Paulo-based bank part-owned by the Libyan government, is posting the biggest losses in the Brazilian bond market this week as an uprising against ruler Moammar Gadhafi escalates.
The yield on the bank’s 7.875 percent dollar bonds due in 2020 surged 46 basis points in the past week, the biggest increase among Brazilian corporate debt, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Brazilian corporate borrowing costs fell 1 basis point, or 0.01 percentage point, over the same period, while those for emerging-market companies also slid 1 basis point, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s CEMBI index.
Investors are shunning Banco ABC debt as the clashes between Gadhafi’s security forces and opponents in Libya prompted Standard & Poor’s on Feb. 22 to cut the government’s ranking to BBB+, the third-lowest investment grade. A day later Bahrain-based Arab Banking Corp., Banco ABC’s parent company, was downgraded by S&P and Fitch Ratings, which cited the Libyan central bank’s 59.4 percent ownership.

Canada to send six CF-18s for Libya 'no-fly' mission

Canada will contribute six CF-18 fighter jets to help enforce a no-fly zone in Libya, sources have told CTV News.
"The Canadian government has made the decision late today that Canada will send six CF-18 fighter jets to join the Americans, the British and the French and other countries that will participate in imposing a no-fly zone," CTV's Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife reported
The jets will be based out of Italy and could be there as soon as Friday.
After weeks of speculation the UN Security Council has moved to "establish a ban on all flights in the airspace" in the North African country and authorized "all necessary measures" to protect civilians, according to the draft version of a resolution.
The resolution also demanded an immediate ceasefire and called on Gadhafi to "take all measures to protect civilians and meet their basic needs."
Word of the resolution was greeted by celebrations in the rebel-held town of Benghazi. The UN vote came shortly after Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi warned of a massive military offensive on the town.

The resolution states that "all necessary means" can be used to enforce the no-fly zone...Flights to provide humanitarian aid, medicine, and evacs are exempt.....
The vote was 10 for and 0 against....There were 5 abstentions, they were China, Russia, Germany, India, and Brazil.....
