I've done a lot of traveling through America and have seen so many differences among each of the states that its hard to see them as united except maybe by one or two factors. I mean gas prices are different, economies are different, the health care services, government rules and sales taxes are different. Not to mention the way people act in the different states.

My first thought was you might want to become aquatinted with American history. The majority of Americans like the liberties we have that some do not have. I have religious freedom. I don't have to cover myself with a burka or walk ten paces behind a male. Though our system could use some overhauling we do vote in who we want for president and other government officials. It is not dictated or just one party appointees. If I do not like something I may protest peacefully without fear of being shot. If you give it some thought I am sure you can see many ways we are united.

We learned to argue and debate friendly is the short answer. So we are different? Such make for a lively, viable and interesting society.
What they think in Hawii is a world different of what the think in Florida and Vice Versa. The same with what they do. But big deal. Instead of being vanilla ice cream, the country is rocky road. But it functions better than another large country in the world. Though China today is making giant leaps there.
We fought a civil war to keep this country one. Since then, millions of men and woman have taken a oath to defend it. There is the real reason that the country is still united and here today.
Today, we use our politics debate the major issues of the day. Allowing the majority place the man or woman into office that best can resolve those issues. That is friendly debate and argument.

Actually, the answer lies in you OP and the difference you cite....these difference are called freedoms...
What unites us is not freedom, what unites us is our "LOVE" for freedom...One common denominator second to none.....

i too have traveled through america...from one corner to the other and back again...and people are'nt really that different...i think, actually, they are pretty much the same everywhere i've been...but what i think "unites" americans is really kinda simple...but then again, i'm simple minded ..it is inherent...weither you've just got off the boat {and signed your documentation...lets not forget that} or you are a descendant of someone who was in the revolution...we all have one thing in common...and that is a desire for freedom...freedoms like no other country on this planet...it is within us all to WANT to be free...when those freedoms are theatened is when we are our at our best, as far as standing for one another...it is OUR country...it is'nt MINE or YOURS...it's our country...
