In my country of birth the wedding and engagement rings are returned to the husband when the relationship ends. What is your custom? My ex refuses to return them - they were pretty expensive.

I bought the wedding rings and I would have been happy for him to keep his on the split. But he chose to return it to me and that felt really strange. I think I would have preferred him to keep it. I never did get an engagement ring, but designed and bought a ring for myself at the best of a dear female friend of mine way after I got married....Then one day, in one of his typical rages, he threw that ring away and I never found it again, despite scouring the (very large)garden. I was devastated as it was my own creation and a gift to myself.

Many years later, just when I thought I might melt the wedding bands down to make a brand new ring for myself, my house was broken into, with all the jewellery stolen, including those rings!...
I guess I wasn't meant to have a new ringhmmm

I have no idea of any particular custom, though. Had I been given the rings, I would have wanted to return them, unless he didn't want them back. Either way, I wouldn't be wearing them again. I doubt it will ever be an issue again though.peace

I hadn't read your op prroperly as I had to leave the screen(had a client come in!lol)...

Shame that if she knew it was the custom, that she chose not to return the rings. Oh, well. I guess you can treat that as part of the property settlement. Let her have them if she so desperately wants them. No point fighting over them unless you really do want them, not just for the custom aspect. You will probably want to sell them in any case. Maybe consider deducting their cost from the overall settlement. Meantime, perhaps better to use your energy more constructively.

peace

When I bought them I told her she can have them as long as she was with me because this is our custom. So she knew it, but now she hid them away. I wanted to make them into something for my daughter.

It's often the way. People get greedy. If you haven't yet told her, let her know that is what you intended to do. Maybe she will do the right thing and keep them for your daughter for when she is old enough to have rings made for her. You might not be on the best of terms, communication wise right now, I have no idea. I can't imagine she would not consider turning them into something for your daughter once she knows that is your intention. But if you talk about it, it might turn out that way, especially if your daughter gets wind of it.grin
