Do we have to abide by the law in Australia?

I notice Nicola Roxon is questioning the validity of a law that allows men to get twice the inheritance of women?????

No we shouldnt have to, they chose to come and live here, they should abide by our laws not the laws they left behind.

They were saying on the radio today many women from The Middle East do not realise these laws do no function in Australia and a family Will can be contested to make it even and lawful

This is my view only, but since Egypt is under Sharia law now, and so are other places, then when our immigrants come here, they know that we allow them their culture, so I am guessing that because Sharia is also their culture, that is why they are going to push for it..

Someone needs to clearly tell them, yes, you can eat whatever it is that you eat, you can educate however, you can dress however and you can pray and follow your own religion, but you cannot bring your laws over here..

daggyone: So how would you relate this back to the man being worth 2 women in Sharia law Jem in relation to the division of family assets in accordance to the Will?

Will is the right of the giver... they can will family assests as they see fit... as it sometimes happens, the Will is not always proportioned fairly, which is why so many people contest it...

so I have heard, and watched within my own family. My great gran died without ... after her hubby died, the family estate went to her only son, who lost the lot... but he did care for her sort of til she died... but the $$ did not go to her... because she was female and wife, it went to the next male heir, so it is what it is... for many cultures...

Oh a touchy subject raises its head again well anyway I think it is.

Christian in many ways doesn’t behalves any better or think better than Muslim, both believe in the same (I believe silly) unsupported notion of a one god, which many Australians like myself don’t believe in.
My faith in Christianity was completely lost after a front seat watching what really been done to others both in country, and in other countries. Basically I truly consider Christian at very least all supporters of mass murders, lairs and thieves.

Iraq 1991 our government was party to the murder of at least 250,000 Muslim, and subsequently over 10 years party to starving and withholding medical supplies from thousands of Iraqis men women and children, then party to the invasion of Afghanistan and then again Iraq, killing hundreds of thousands of people, including having knowledge of the mass murder of over 11,000 unarmed prisoners of war in Afghanistan, as well full knowledge of the miss treatment of prisoners in Iraq, and other places including in Cuba. More recently an American women judge has engaged in a form of maltreatment of a prisoner of war using the American flawed judicial system as most now believe the government there and here deliberately false account of the truth.

Three days ago a 21 year old Brazilian kid was murdered in Pitt Street, Sydney, has been reported in Brazilian News Papers and apparently the Sydney Morning Herald, the police repeatedly Tazered and kicked by a female police officer while the kid was laying on the ground screaming for help. The witness who stated that was breath and dug tested and the police are investigating themselves in the matter with (no doubt Christian Ombudsmen) an Ombudsmen over viewing how to cover that up.
I’ve no faith in the right wing lunatics that in the past have got away with the crap that goes on here. At least there appears at least a possibility their hold on the corridors of power is dwindling.

in my way of thinking no one is "worth" anything more thaqn any one other.

What they do with their own assets is their right, but to enforce their law on to the general population is not right.

If it was only assets Sharia affected it would not be so bad but the law goes much further than that.

If we moved to a muslim country Im sure as eggs that they wouldnt change the law for us , so why the hell should we change our long established laws for them. Australia has the best lifestyle in the world, everyone wants to come here for a better life...then they want to change us and what we are and believe in. Aussies have never been politically correct, now we cant even be Aussies in fear of upsetting or offending someone...sheeesh

You said that so well.
A few counter points, Thailand has been slowly changing to a Muslim country like Bali and other South Eastern Countries, this may occur here.
As more and more middle eastern refugees migrate to our sunny shores, they bring with them their political clout and voice meaning we will change to accommodate their lifestyle choices or risk the loss of being elected in certain enclaves.
We live in a very red taped society with laws for everything from selling a can of soft drink to busking in the street, you can't do these things without the public liability insurance and relevant permits. I call it the nanny society, too Americanised and disinfected leaving nobody the opportunity to incubate creativity and grow their life experiences. I know when I first started out in the markets, I needed my own public liability insurance and to be registered for GST and have and ABN. All these things were not needed when my parents and theirs sold at the local flea market. It's a weird experience going to somewhere like Thailand and seeing free enterprise in its full splendour, everybody selling stuff from their garage under their home, people walking about selling hot stir fried food from their mobile wok and fresh vegetables and fruit everywhere you look. Nobody has a monopoly on selling stuff there unlike the Woolworths and Coles of this world.

Its so simple' just make sure you leave a will and leave your inheritance to who ever you please, that means it is your own free will I where it will go dont need a law for that.

dunno

How would you be if you were the Australian born woman to a Middle Eastern family and your brother got twice the inheritance you were allotted in the family Will due to their beliefs?

Isn't Sharia law their religious laws - as opposed to our legislated laws?

Therefore, if you want to be a good Muslim you have to follow/obey their laws which just so conveniently favour males i.e. inheritance laws, some countries women not allowed to drive, not allowed to have a passport without their husbands permission, men allowed more than one wife etc. etc. australia

I believe in UK it is already happening that Sharia law is running alongside the UK legal system. thumbs down

It will happen here - religious discrimination gets it through.

There's always a technicality and the religion card will push these laws into our society.

Hi Merri

More than one law works well amongst the same people, like in Indonesia amongst Indonesians who are Christian and Muslim. In Australia where we are not of the same race, it would be quite suicidal to even entertain the idea.

I wonder how the other societies would react to public lashing, hanging or burning women alive for having intuition?
