2 of my father's uncles died at Ypres in WW1 and his father died in 1940 from the longtime affects of mustard gas and the conditions during WW1.

My father served in WW2 and would never talk about his time.

My stepfather served in the RAAF and fought in the Pacific, including Milne Bay and it was only until he got involved with the restoration of a Beaufighter (about 2001) that he would talk about the good times.

My mother served with Coastwatch during WW2. She would talk about the great time she had in Cronulla during that time. All those soldiers and sailors out there looking for a girl to date. The 3 times the air-raid sirens went off, her father's bomb shelter was full of water and they couldn't use it.

I remember the bomb shelter with railway sleepers all over it still there the early 70s. The current owners converted it into a swimming pool but retained a lot of the features to maintain the heritage value of the whole place.

Remember those that have fallen while trying to protect our way of life, and let us not forget the futility of war. sad flower sad flower australia newzealand

Faithe: Yes they have survived a lot worse than a bit of rain Lookin

I have been asked over the last few years to take my ex-military Land Rover in the March. But I have to remove all the canvas and the windows so that the cameras can zoom in on the vets. Takes about 2 hours on my own. But if raining, I am allowed to have the canvas and windows on with the sides rolled up. Takes about 4 hours to put it all back on again. I need to leave home at 6.30am to get there and the odds are that it will rain.

Luckily, about 40 from my Club take their ones (Jeeps are easy to raise and lower the canvas, they swivel back) and the Staff cars have no problem. Many other clubs are also involved - Rolls Royce, Mustangs.

It is great to see so many doing their bit to support ANZAC Day. A little bit of rain does not stop them.

They are talking about Soldiers bringing their dogs who stand by their side next time as they have been a godsend, and also putting a memorial up for those who lost their lives.

Sorry Jem but Remembrance Day is already taken on 11/11, the official ending of The Great War where we would never see the likes of it again.

ANZAC Day is a day of reflection of the futility of it all and those that died or suffered to let us enjoy our free way of life.

And Robplum, there are many like you who did not volunteer but still did their duty. It took many years to get the recognition of what you and your mates did. I was in Canberra the day the Govt finally acknowledged your efforts. The rolling thunder of all those bikes heading to the War Memorial will stay with me forever.

In my job (Aged Care in the Community) I have a lot of clients who are Veterans or Widows of Veterans. They are all wonderful people, one thing they have in common is their pride in what they did for their country but also more noticeable is how humble they are and really underestimate the sacrifices they made.

ALL of them have such wonderful stories to tell and most don't realise the magnitude of what they did, they talk about it so casually.

Absoloute treasures one and all. australia newzealand thumbs up

Thank you, thank you to one and all.
