I find it absoloutely mind boggling that anyone could pay $120 million dollars for one painting?? And I find it pretty ugly anyway dunno

Norwegian painter Edvard Munch's painting The Scream recently sold in New York to an anonymous buyer. And that is not even a world record for a painting.

No accounting for taste I guess?? sigh

Many paintings have very little to do with quality, seen some painted worth millions and I bet I could do a better job pissed and blindfolded. laugh Its about how many are left, or if they are one off from well known people. Have you ever asked yourself why old coins gain value? It has to do with growth in population and more and more collectors over the years, so it creates a demand. wine

Picasso's cubist phase or whatever it was called where you have a face with 3 eyes and an arm coming out of a leg or something like that is the stuff that has got me completely baffled doh

Might be an illiterate uneducated heathen but I still can't for the life of me see what is 'beautiful' about that sort of stuff?? cool wave

I think it's like anything, if it's rare, collectable and of a certain vintage its value can only rise and these things obviously have a niche following.

When it comes to art I'd definitely be a collector if I had bucketloads of money, especially if it came to something so rare and iconic as 'The Scream'.

Shame is that many who are in a position to buy do so purely for investment reasons, they don't tend to sit and eat their vegemite on toast while admiring such artworks hanging in their homes lol.

I did fail to see the value in a 70s Torana that an acquaintance's husband recently sold for $45,000 though?

Apparently its value lay in the fact that it was used for racing back in the day .. my thoughts were that the buyer had far too much money laugh

Spot on Serene, most of the big money that is laid out for these kind of things are for investment, often superannuation?? Or rich Saudis.

Sometimes these paintings you can't appreciate until you are right there in front of it? dunno

But I think I can think of better ways to spend $120m. Think of all the shoes and bags you can buy! cheering thumbs up gotta go happy place

I remember the uproar when under the then Labour Gov, bought a painting called "Blue Poles". I read somewhere its worth over 40 million now.

I owned one of those 70's Torana's a LJ 2door, ended up putting in a 308 V8 with a tricked up auto. Sold it in the late 80's for 8,500 blues

I thought... silly me.... that a painting had to have a certain amount of appeal... this one leaves me dead... ugly ... would not pay 2c for it...

It looks like it was done in a heck of a hurry and the artist must have been drunk... gosh... but what would I know... doh

I just love pretty things... ugly is not part of my world. rose
