robplum: If at arms length we observe our activities, after studying Lam Rim while at arms length the observer, then its possible to obtain some insight into our own harmful negative activities. The activities of our body speech and mind create our tomorrow experience, by ceasing all negative karma causing rebirth we cease cause for suffering rebirths. Benefiting others is the path for all inspiring would be if could be Buddha's known as the Sanga, those travelling the path explained in twenty seven words by the Buddha...

Odd thing is that many of have our ways of emptying the mind of negativity. I found swimming a great way of emptying the mind, I had to concentrate on not drowning so other things drifted away. We went to the local pool every lunchtime to do 12 laps. Not really about the drowning, more on getting my breathing synched with my strokes (2 laps at 6 strokes, 4 at 4 and then every 3 strokes) and whether I wanted to push on that little bit harder and do an extra 4 laps. Although after 16 laps, I was down to breathing every second stroke. I always came away with a clear mind.

My brother coaches target shooting and when someone says they are looking at the target and having doubts about hitting the centre, he tells them to close their eyes and picture black velvet. This empties the mind and allows them more positive concentration.

Inner peace does lead to positive kharma and many cultures recognised this many years ago. Even Jesus expounded this in his teachings, and it is claimed by Krishna as being one of his teachers.

Its possible to say mantra and obtain enlightenment but think Kenndy's were active Catholics and didn't change nothing, because our nature is moving energy and therefore the energy associated to grand daddy was and for as long as it last likely will produce more negativity.

Just stilling the mind (though good) isn't touching on the subjects outcome i referred to

Rob, I do agree with that. Having been on the fringe of different cultures and cults throughout my life, and seeing what they have offered, I have made my choice in not following through with them.

I grew up with a Christian background although felt that the Old Testament (Jewish) did offer a lot. I delved in Krishna for a while (and some others) and have been invited by Hindus and Bhuddists to further myself as my beliefs have not been disimilar. But I do have my own beliefs.

And I do respect what you are saying. It is good to be able to follow a true path where you see enlightenment. Just that not all paths are the same and not all see that 'your' path is the one for them.

i went to sunday school and bible class to, then hit the frog and toad after Nam, looked about here and there most looking what others in other places were into, watched Hindu in Nepal chopping buffalo heads off with one swipe, saw streets running in chicken blood, read a number of versions of the bible and made conscientious decision to have further to do with any of that.
Got pissed and stoned with a Tibetan guy in Darjeeling and later Kathmandu then again in Darjeeling, never disused his belief or anything like that, but saw lot of Monks, nearly died in Bombay and two or three Israeli guys kept me alive.
On coming to Australia 1982 i met a guy named Karma, we picked peaches together in Cobram, later re-met him, which i thought just chance, in Nambour, then spent couple weeks staying with Karma at Chenrezig Institute at Eudlo a Tibetan Mahayana Buddhist teaching and retreat centre nestled in the foothills of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland
< >
Later spent quite a lot of time studying there which didn't do my head any harm, then went on to assist development of a learning centre near Taree, Killabakh, NSW

Martia: All these people on the dole and loving it...who would want to employ any of them as they do Not want to work

Thinking about it ...if they really dont want to work cant they become unemployable and if so what happens then.
They move to a country town where they know there's not a hope of hell of finding employment.
But lets face it, who wants to live in Perth and fly in and out every 4 weeks to a mining camp and leave their young families behind for the sake of $4,000/wk?

I'm channelling your thoughts there lolrolling on the floor laughing I love my Mon arvo swimming laps sessions, the last 30 minutes of the 1 & 1/2hr session can be a bummer but then you just push through the pain and yes, you just breath every stroke or 2 instead of every 3 or 4 laugh

A young dude here whose been on the desalination site earning $4k/week mustn't have saved too much as he's bought himself 4 x new cars but the positive out of that is that he has supported our car industry and car dealers.

That's nothing, for the financial rewards to help their young families prosper.

Migrants would have loved that option, when in the mid to late 50's qualified tradesmen and professionals were given zip, and for their troubles, sent out to word on desert rail yards for peanuts.

Many people today want the rewards without the effort. They forget there is always a cost. And the cost these days is pittance to yesterday, when many families were kept apart for 2 years and more. I'm sure we all know real people with real stories.

The Herald Sun (Melb) yesterday had a bit about the goings on with Gina's mining exploitation. 1700 workers from overseas and this takes special approval from the Feds and a bit of effort and time. Juliar reckons she only heard about this very late last week. She hates the mining giants so much, she will do anything to get them producing more minerals (and taxespeace )

And the article did say that there where 6,300 Aussies jobs there.

Apparently there is a big expo happening in Melbourne regarding work etc., anyway, my lending broker, (Yes Wash, he finally got back to me...)anyway, laugh at the mining recruitment table there was in excess of 100 + people waiting to put their names down or something, the sad thing you hear that some have been waiting in excess of 2 years to get a job just cleaning... never mind driving the trucks etc...

Many many years ago, my mate and I were travelling through the central mines area of WA and we were asked if we were looking for work as there was plenty of jobs going.

4 years ago I was touring with girlfriend through NT and western Qld. Every place we stayed, they were asking us if we were looking for work.

But anyone can clean (okay, some may do it a bit more often than me) and there are plenty of 'locals' that could do that work. And if there was a couple looking for work and one had the skills they want, then the partner could fill the cleaners job. Good way of getting 2 people to stay a bit longer.

And married people on their own tend to miss family, or like a mate of mine who worked at Moomba for 2 years to get the family financial after his business went under, his wife found someone else. So they are a bit fussy about putting people on as they really want them to stay for a decent period of time.

I have had to fill 2 different positions at work and the resumes could teach our budding writer a thing or two about fantasy writing. Unfortunately, most of the candidates could not come near their resumes when interviewed. Oddly enough, the low-paid position attracted more "highly qualified" people than the the senior position.frustrated doh frustrated

venere08: OK, then what if the Unions do find enough Aussie workers.

And by the way, when does this new thing kick in, whereby unemployed family folk happy to collect massive fortnightly dole cheques instead of going to work, will actually have their payments cut if they don't get off their butts?? I think that should free up a good portion of the workforce.

"Massive fortnightly cheques"? The dole is a bit over $200/week. This should cover housing and all bills, food, medication and travel to interviews for up to 100km until they eventually find job.

Would you live on it? This has not been indexed to inflation for ten years. By any measure it is not massive at all.

Add to this that most unemployed are required to work for 20 hours a week with charities - this works out for $10/hr when the national minimum wage is around $18.

Being unemployed is a financial and disaster and a health hazard because cannot even afford medication on it.

In QLD it costs about $18 to get to Brisbane from the Gold Coast for an interview. Just think about this massive payout for those on the dole... and whether you would survive on it for a few weeks or months without additional funds to touch.

Of-course those amounts that you quote are not massive. I refer to amounts received for 3-5 children, where given the choice between going to work and staying home, to earn about the same amount, I have personally known many who choose to stay at home. We haven't earned the term 'welfare mentality' for nothing yanno. I'm not hre to make blanket statements, so of-course there are many exceptions.

It will be interesting to see how these latest efforts to fill the 1700 mining positions with Aussie talent, will reveal.

In answer to your question, could I live on $200.00...No, I cannot.(I could in Italy)... Which is why I am in a pickle now from being a part-time student. Chasing work like crazy now...Might even get my truck licence and head for Gina country!wow

Work for $200 for half a weeks wage when you can sit on your but and complain about having to get off your butt and get a real wage. Or get off your but and earn $360 for those 20 hours.

"I am not going to work all those hours just for $160." Heard it so many time over the last 40+ years that it falls on deaf ears. Both my grandfather lost employment during the Great Depression. One became a Country Buyer who travelled NSW extensively to get a meal on the table. The other went out and "worked for the dole" so he could get a meal on the table.

I have met many people who have looked for work and have had very high expectations of what they want so will do and not accept something that will "lower their status in life."

My ex-brother-in-law is a highly qualified and respected builder (Uni qualified for high-rise, etc) and was almost bankrupt through dodgy developers. He ended uo working for my brother as a Brickies Labourer on less than 1/4 his income to get money in. Although he and my sister still enjoyed the "high life" but sponged off my mother to help with the bills to keep up the life with ballet lessons, food and 'decent' reataurants.

Revealer, when my marriage broke up, and I had to join the ranks of unemployed single woman (I had been a kept woman for 20 years ) I was placed on Newstart - sorry that was not enough to for daily living costs nor my mortgage, but I struggled, applied for and was granted hardship, did the courses at tafe - I didn't get the job that I wanted which was administration, but I didn't care I wanted a job, and I took factory work after all it is an honest pay for an honest days labour (in my case torture chamber)... work is there, but sometimes, you have to stop reaching for the stars, and look what's in front of you... I think the expectations of the youth (I have 4 of them) is that they think they are entitled to a gold plated plate... 2 of my children followed and stuck to their dreams - and they achieved their dreams, but they still had to put in the foundations first...
My other 2 are still at school - they are in for a rude shock when they enter the real world...
