After reading the story it makes me wonder what would've happened if the lady in the story hadn't shot the bad guy.
I also take into consideration the response time of the police officer(s) would've been.

I'd be quite happy to. I've advocated all along for a strictly US forum on CS. As for US bases in your country, I'm a Libertarian and I don't particularly like our country playing policeman to the rest of the world, or "contaminating" other countries.
I'm all for an isolationist US. Trouble is, my country has politicians. And you know how that goes.
Whatever. I'm out of this useless debate between people who like to argue for no apparent reason other than there's nothing good on the telly and housework doesn't appeal. Would you really allow something bad happen to you in a life and death situation? Or would you just roll over and let harm come to you and say, WOW, that was great, can I have another since I would rather have the criminal live and I hope that he doesn't kill me?!

Perhaps, but correlation doesn't necessarily mean cause and effect. And even when it does, it has to be determined which is cause and which is effect.
Is that that having a gun increases the likelihood of homicide, or is it that that people who live in high crime areas tend to buy more guns?
As for suicide, Japan has a very high rate of suicide and yet the people there don't have guns. They use poison or other means. Someone who is intent on suicide will find a way. Worldwide, suicide correlates more to financial or social stress than it does to gun ownership.
