Baroness Thatcher's funeral cost the taxpayer an estimated £3.6m, Downing Street has confirmed. Several thousand invited mourners attended the funeral at St Paul's Cathedral, including dignitaries from around the world and all Lady Thatcher's prime ministerial successors. The presence of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh effectively raised it to a state event. It was the first time the monarch had attended the funeral service of a former prime minister since Sir Winston Churchill's state ceremony in 1965. The amount revealed by the Government includes some £2m "opportunity costs" for police who would have been on other duties on the day. Ceremonial costs, including the service at St Paul's, the reception at the Mansion House and the printing and circulation of invitations, came to around £500,000. An estimated £1.1m went on additional security and policing. The final costs will be published in due course, although the Prime Minister's spokesman said he expected they would be close to the estimated totals. No 10 confirmed Lady Thatcher's family would be making a contribution to the overall bill, including the undertakers' costs and flowers.
Churchill will be remembered for stopping a statist monster from taking over the globe, whereas Thatcher will be remembered for creating a statist monster that will take over the globe.
And Britain under Churchill was a land never more united, Britain under Thatcher was a land never more divided.
This funeral was like saying that Thatcher was equal to Churchill, which is not only an insult to Winston, but also serves as a disgraceful belittlement to the sacrifice the war generation made. It is like saying that Thatcher's hour was as important and as just and noble as their own, when even to compare the two is an insult to honour and patriotism.

She led the victorious war against Argentina cobbled up by their leader to cover up the failure of the Argentinian government.
The war was controlled from the very same war room, at HMS Warrior situated at Northwood, that Winston used.
The first and only woman prime minister of England who put to flight the rebellious miners who sought to undermine our economy. Her achievements are too numerous to list here and were achieved without the bottle of brandy Winston carried with him.
I realise you wish to belittle Margaret because of her politics, but I'm afraid your voice won't be heard above the cheers.
There is no comparison between Churchill and Thatcher. One served ALL the British people, the other only the FEW.-

Like it or lump it... if there is a gathering of people anywhere, that includes dignitaries, never mind royalty....
Security has to be a biggie... and that clearly will cost..
This is the price we pay these days... of where the world has taken us.. on this dreadful religious divide.... which involves right nutters.. who want to do bad things..
tomcatwarne: Your bitterness flows over onto the pages of this thread, I will not judge you. I'll leave that to our peers who have probably read more of your whinings than me.
I have every right to be bitter. Many, many moons ago older people used to send masses of the young out to die in wars - and today you have achieved the same atrocity, the same scale of murder and despair, but you have achieved it in peacetime through nothing but inferiority and laziness.
Merriweather: Is your glass half empty tonight... I mean.. just asking,,, in case ya need a top up...??????
It disgusts me that people have no humility over the world which they've left behind when considering the one that they inherited.
The generations that have turned opportunity into disaster, victory into defeat and success into failure will be judged uncompromisingly by history and hopefully by God too.

dont be fooled... I dont read 'peace ' anywhere really when I read our news..
If its not warring of words... it's warring of actions in many countries of this world...
and if its neither of that above, its a religious dictatorship which undermines people, women and certainly could not be called PEACE ,

I think anyone who witnessed Churchill's funeral will know the two events cannot be compared. At Churchill's funeral there was a massive and genuine outpouring of grief . As for Thatcher's most just looked on in morbid curiosity, few were genuinely grief stricken.
