When I look back over the past 20 years, there was only 1 Superpower remaining. I would have predicted then a great hegemony happening in most areas of the world. It was a rare moment for US/Western Europe to do that. But look what happened instead? The exact opposite in so many places!
Iraq: Normally hostile to Iran. Gets turned into a friend of Iran. Against any wish of the Americans. Their Oil contracts on the biggest fields go to the Chinese and Russians and some select Europeans. LOL
Egypt: Invariably souring and lurching towards a more confrontational stance with Israel. A nightmare for any US Neo-Con.
9/11 and the aftermath A'stan: A'stan and Iraq have basically eroded any goodwill the Americans had around the world post 9/11. The Taliban still effectively control much of the Southern parts of A'stan. Pakistan will still be sponsors of them. Basically it's back to c'91-92 Afghanistan once Nato is out. The Northern Alliance/Uzbek/Tajik/Harare in the Northern half, and the Pashtuns in the South. Same situation again.
It's actually nuts! Given a golden opportunity with the power vacuum at the end of the Cold War and the only real inroads has been Eastern Europe. And frankly, that isn't really going to last either.
