This is Victoria's only Public Holiday between Queens B'day in June and Xmas. They got rid of some others to make this official.
After 35 years (did it at school) of betting on it while I lived in Sydney, always picked at least a place and more than 1/2 of the time picked the winner (and a couple of other spots down the field). Moved to Melb 11 years ago and never picked a place since. Given up betting on it these days.

I can remember when TV first came out, which was before the roos got TV, anyway a long long time ago i can remember joining the crowds watching the melbourne cup run on a TV in a radio shop window, also of course often in those days there wasn't so much under-arm bowling going on over here, consiquently kiwi nags often won while in respect to the public holiday bit, i think only applies here in victoria

My enduring memory of Cup Day was primary school sports on the local oval with all the other schools in the area. Come cup time everything stopped and the race was broadcast over the PA system.
Actually it used to be broadcast over the PA at high school too.

Yeah I totally forgot about it until I was driving past the pub and saw a sign on my way home from an appointment this morning.
Have always worked on the day so haven't had many opportunities to do the lunch thing, but did a few years ago..
Got totally smashed on the champers, met a pair of English backpackers and we went back to mine and continued partying .. we had sooo much fun
When I was working in Brisbane the city used to go very quiet in the leadup to the running of the Melbourne Cup and the ladies would be dressed up just to go to the pub and watch it on telly

Where I work, we don't get Melbourne Cup day, which means it's a really easy drive in to work. It's great.
On the other hand, you have to watch out for drunks on the way home.
Well I haven't been to a Melbourne Cup Lunch in years but will be tomorrow, taken today and Tues off - need a break before the run up to Xmas so why not ?
Going down to my local club cos they have a courtesy bus, not risking my licence
Probably have a couple of stupid bets, just be good to watch the lead up to the race and get a bit of atmosphere.
Was in UK a couple of years ago at this time, talked my sister in law in going shopping and we called in the local TAB (betting shop), they had the running order for the race - and the guy behind the counter thought I was Aussie and asked me if I had any tips
Think my daughter picked a place winner but that was about it.
I know a few people from Melbourne who have holiday apartments on the Gold Coast and come up here at this time of year every year to get away from the hullabaloo of the Cup.
I also know some peeps who live here right on the V8's race track - and they go away in the week leading up to the car race cos they are like prisoners in their own homes.

My thoughts are
Being the big race is on a tuesday a shipload of peeps will be taking the monday(today) off, so two days of lost productivity
Why can't they(?) change it to the monday or a friday (friday makes more sense)? JMO only i think seeing as the cup is a huge event
Would'nt it be a good idea to let peeps have the day off after the big race to sober up
Why do the authorities keep harping on about drunk drivers, road deaths,peeps losing licences etc.. etc.. when they(?) know a large amount of race goers drink heaps on the tuesday then go to work on the wed, using machinery, builders on scaffolds, surgeons etc
Is it revenue raising, tradition, stupidity or ???????
