unlaoised: What a great thread! I think there's a HUGE difference between what I call "book smart" and "street smart". I was married to a man who is highly intelligent but has zero common sense. A list of degrees as long as my arm means nothing. Natural intelligence wins, every time
KNenagh: Hi Brigantia, interesting topic. I do like someone intelligent and practical, my exes were self-employed, working with their hands and quite smart. I also know some intelligent, highly impractical people.
You don't have to educated to be intelligent, but at a certain level you have to be intelligent to get a good education.
Yes, one of my friends is highly intelligent, huge heart, completely naive and I think some people do take advantage of that.
I am actually a believer that men are more LOGICAL than women. I also believe that women can DIVERSIFY better than men. Neither are smarter than the other; neither is better than the other. Viva La Difference!
Aditionally, I saw a thread recently about Grammar Police; many people I have met have difficulty recognizing particular letters or they may have full-blown dyslexia. Good to remember that someone's spelling is not a representation of their intelectual abilities.

Brigantia: I know exactly what you mean! I have always believed that a formal education is no way a promise of intelligence and the possession of a degree is totally unimportant to me.
Maybe you dont need to have it. But if you have cancer, will you go to med-check it to someone without a degree?
Brigantia: The most stupidist people I have ever met spent WAAYYY too long in university... lol
I guess it depends on how you define stupid. To me, no one is stupid in EVERY aspect. And no one is smart (either book smart or street smart) in EVERY aspect either.

Some formal education is based upon experiential learning techniques and not all degrees are learned out of books.
I think there is value in formal education and life education. One is not better than the other.
To judge people with a formal education is no different from judging people with no formal education.
If someone has a formal education, but no common sense, it's a part of who they are. If someone has common sense, but can't read, or write, it's a part of who they are.

I agree with you. I teach my girls that to marry the guy with real high IQ is like marrying the guy with the really low IQ. No common sense.

Book smart is nice but functionality in day to day real life situations and places is a must. There's a point where education and being analytical is a good thing and there's the "other" point where you just want to show them the door.
Full level common sense and intelligent will do just fine.

Agreed. A balance is essential, I believe.
Life learning and book learning are no better than the other; I have not stated that in this thread at all. My point is that one must have a balance; formal education qualifications does not automatically give you intelligence.

I don't know one person who has never done a "stupid" thing in their lives; I always remember the day I put the cheese in my bedroom drawer and the camera in the fridge. DOOH!
Having a sense of humor is also essential in this life!
