While there are certainly unfounded reactions, there is a great deal of frustration with out and out crime. As police forces decline, especially in economically hit and/or smaller populated areas, the people are becoming a vigilante society. Some people I know recently had their truck hotwired and stolen right from in front of their house. The truck represents a huge part of their ability to make ends meet. Whether or not it was because of staffing, apathy, or both, the police action was very lame. They hesitated to take an in-person report, vacillated back and forth, etc...When the people suggested that they felt their neighborhood was being forced into vigilant citizenry, the police simply shrugged. A vehicle now is equivalent to what a horse was in the nineteenth century. What was the legal action taken on horse thieves? Kapiche?

I understand. It is difficult for those of us who still see America as the lovely country we were brought up in, especially small town life with Fourth of July picnics and parades, etc...The community I was brought up in was very nice, the residents friendly and quick to help in a pinch. We didn't lock our doors, neighbors would breeze in and out for casual visits, we even slept in our yard in sleeping bags in the summer, no worries. Imagine how sad it is to see a wonderful way of life be so compromised. Still, it is my country, and I will defend it, for the sake of the nice people who still are here. thanx for your response, it is valid.
