pedro27: why do people drink, its a form of getting high
Someone may drink in the beginning because they like the effect produced by alcohol. As time goes on and someone crosses the invisible line to become an alcoholic at this point they drink to overcome a craving beyond their mental control. The disease of alcoholism is a 2 fold illness. An allergy of the body coupled with an obsession of the mind.

It's like Marmite.
It's seen as a socially acceptable drug, much like cannabis. Some can handle a drink or smoke once in a while, and there are some that need it to help them get through the day.
These days, you could walk past a alcoholic, and barely notice them. They have got so used to it, that it just doesn't effect them as much as a teenager out on a Saturday night hurling a half digested kebab from the taxi window.

Indeed. Look upon it as a reward scheme after a hard day. It's not compulsory to get blind drunk, just have a glass or two, if you're that way inclined.

With summer approaching, you'll maybe be heading out to the bar garden and having a few in the sun. Just don't over do it And rememebr the sun lotion. But, don't drink it. If it starts to affect your moods, then there is something not quite right.

You must be joking!
We went there before. Remember when I said you were all pastey looking? You get a couple of days a year, which makes you all look like belisha beacons.

We are still hoping for those couple of days though!

jac379: What about someone who has a couple of glasses of wine with their dinner every night? Would you class them as an alcoholic?
I could not class them as being an alcoholic or not, only because I cannot label others as such. It is more of a personal admission or self conclusion. A wide variety of drinking patterns exist.
