bungallow55: Alcohol kills one person every 10 seconds worldwide. Alcohol kills 3.3 million people worldwide each year, more than AIDS, tuberculosis and violence combined. This according to World Health Organization.

Thank goodness I only have a case of beer daily

Alcohol does not kill...... MISUSE of alcohol can kill. Just as with most things, in moderation probably not a problem.

Its like saying guns kill people, and not people...?

dunno

I speak for Ireland, Ive never thought it was Stigma here, even though we have, had huge problems. Is there a family that doesnt have a casualty? Ask any womens Refuge and Drink problems lead to wives been beaten and the subsequent barring order/going to the Refuge. I feel that no matter where you go here in Ireland there are signs for A.A. in every Surgery, Hostels, and you are offered a warm welcome and a cup of Tea, its a way of life, and you have your Sponsor. I am not saying it is easy, but alot of being have remained sober due to the 12Steps and their friends in A.A. So many have died from Liver problems and Throat Cancer due to drink and the inevitable chaim smoking which seems to accompany the last stages of Alcoholism. With regard to homelessness, most of the men/women I worked with had severe and painful mental health Disorders, some used Alcohol as a medication for their delusions and Depression, as they were sick of being in and of Hospital and being chemically lobotomized by the Medications. I feel Ireland has to change its attitudes to Drink 'He's a great man for the Drink' 'Wow she can down here drink as good as any man' this glorification of booze has to stop. I have lost a friend of 40years to Alcohol. It makes me very very sad.... to see the mind go, the body go, sad flower

joey987: I could not class them as being an alcoholic or not, only because I cannot label others as such. It is more of a personal admission or self conclusion. A wide variety of drinking patterns exist.

I agree wholeheartedly, Joey. tip hat

mollybaby: I'm going to be the devil's advocate and say that there is not ENOUGH stigma attached

Especially in this country.

It is still socially acceptable to go out on a Saturday night and get pissed, puke on the streets, fall over, bump into people trying to walk the streets etc.

People who do not drink are often looked at with a little mistrust. Or else presumed that they are thr designated driver! That is often the 'excuse' people have to give for Not drinking.

This does not happen to the same extent in other countries.
In Spain, for example, even younger people would not get drunk like that. Because it is socially unacceptable, and they would be embarrassed to be found in that condition. We laugh when we hear that 4 drinks is binge drinking. We consider that an aperitif!

'Interventions' only happen on US drama shows.

We boast about being the greatest drinkers in the world, and look down on citizens of other countries who cant/wont drink as much.

We probably have one of the highest alcoholism rates in the world, but a heavy drinker would simply be known as somebody who 'likes their pint'

Time for a little stigma maybe?

BTW..yes, i do drink and enjoy it. But luckily in moderation.

Why would stigma, that is disgrace, or shame be the solution?

I wonder how well putting a 20 year old, or a 50 year old on the naughty step would work.

I wonder if people would be better served if treated with respect, compassion and as if they're intelligent human beings.

Because what is happening now, is the opposite of stigma, it is being put up on a pedestal for being ' a great drinker'

It is only when it becomes socially unacceptable aka stigmatised that people might see that it is not a good idea to drink until you fall over.

I agree the social acceptability of binge drinking has increased the health risks, especially to young people, but why stigma as a solution, as opposed to say, education?

I wonder if people could see the damage that young people in their 20's and 30's are experiencing whether that might be more efficacious than saying it's naughty.

I wonder if the stigma, the naughtiness, the rebelliousness could be a part of the package, just as much as the social acceptability of weekend binge drinking. I wonder if it's all wrapped up together in some way, this stigma and rebellion.

So do you think the key to recovery is treating people with disrespect, with no compassion and as if they're stupid?

Obviously, education would be the best solution. It usually is.

But alcohol is so engrained in Irish society that showing pictures of diseased livers and telling people about the dangers of drinking won't be enough.

It has to become socially unacceptable to be so drunk you can't remember the night before.
Rather than the current thinking - Íf I don't remember it, it was definitely a good night!'frustrated

jac379: I think it's interesting that you did use the word 'respect'.

I think it says something about the way we view people and value people.

I think we find it very hard to see some people as human, sometimes.
oh I have compassion for alcoholics and respect,I have compassion for myself I am a recovering alcoholic of 5 years,I have the upmost compassion for a person in the throes of alcoholism.
