Merriweather: Question for you boys...

Ok.. any suggestions for getting rid of the possum who has taken residence in the wall cavity. ??

I am serious now..

I have glued the tiles on the roof on the fourth tile row in, which is where the wall cavity is..

I have only one room which is brick veneer.. and this is the room that has had possums before..
Last time I had possums, I used to get a cage and put it in the ceiling with food in it.. I would catch the same possum every night, and by law, have to release it outside the house..

and finally, after 7 years.. I had to replace the ceiling in the room, because of the piddle ..

the only way I managed to stop it all was by putting large cement pavers on the roof ... all over the place.. and it was really a mess.

For years now.. I have been possum free, but now this business is starting again...

I could poison, but worried I am going to have dead possum in the cavity..

I don't have the strength anymore to continually put up a possum trap in the manhole.. and bring down a possum daily..

so , any ideas or suggestions would be really appreciated..

I am besides myself.. more because I don't want to replace the ceiling again.. ??
hehe could be coming back for a meal you were feeding him each night ,

I was going to suggest putting a cat in the roof, mortal enemies!

I'm inundated with them here and they keep my old Heeler cross fit and healthy although her hips are suffering a bit.cheers

Lookin4missright: ps, Plan "C"

At work a lot of companies have a recording going of birds playing (aggressive ones i think) as to keep other birds from flying into their warehouses and eating their stock etc...

Maybe try putting a recorder in roof of a bigger possum growling or summin or "Piddler On The Roof"

Sorry ..................

That is a thought... I could record someone growling.. ( which would not be hard) and shove the recording up there.. Def a good plan..

More to the point... isn't there electrical devices that you can put up with sound waves that just drive these critters batty.??

uh oh

Thanks for Plan A and B... might be a travel issue for the boyz.. and re Tony... I don't think I could manage that one..

grin

Pestrol Possum Away

Humane, no chemicals, environmentally friendly maintenance free and cost effective.

The new Pestrol Possum Away repels pests by using ultrasonic sounds generated from the units as well as utilising a strobe light. A further optional audible setting is available if required.

With sound waves from 15kHz - 25kHz

Pestrol possum repeller emits ultrasonic sound (inaudible to most humans)
Adjustable settings to change frequency.
Uses 9v / 240V AC transformer supplied
Weather resistant
Environmentally friendly.

The effective range is up to 10 metres through to 170 degrees.

The primary feature of the device is the ultrasonic signal. This is a high pressure sound that is only slightly audible to humans. However, it is very effective at startling and scaring away unwanted pests. Using a variable pulse generator, the ultrasonic emits a range of fluctuating sound waves to prevent the pest from becoming accustomed to the sound.

The pestrol possum away operates continously and has the option of using the built-in motion sensor that activates the unit when animals move into its coverage area. This area size is 24 x 15 metres = 360M2. You can change the setting to be on continuously to aid in controlling smaller animals like rodents and birds.

In total there are 3 mode settings -

Motion Sensor: The Motion Sensor will activate the ultrasonic and sonic sounds when it detects the pests are in range.

Constant: The Constant setting will activate the ultrasonic and sonic noises and cycle through them at the range you fix at varying intervals. The motion detector will deactivate on this setting.

Continuous Sweep: The Continuous Sweep will activate a range of sonic and ultrasonic frequencies randomly at intervals. The motion detector will deactivate on this setting. This is helpful for repelling several different types of pests.

The pestrol possum away can be placed:

around the yard
garden
ceiling cavity
under eaves
campsite
garage
carport
workshops
porch
patio
balcony
greenhouses
pond
barn
rooftops
food storage.

Waterproof control box comes with a remote control, fixings, 9v transformer with Australian (SAA / c-tick) plug.

The pestrol possum repeller is also portable and can be powered with 4 x C cell batteries (not supplied)

The unit is wall mountable and comes with screws and fasteners for this purpose if required.

With hundreds of Possum repellers sold Australia wide already - order today and as always receive a 30 day money back guarantee.

Roger that thumbs up wave

If your still have probs with possums groundhog groundhog groundhog groundhog groundhog Bang a couple of hungry refugees up in your roof doh

Four Burmese refugees have avoided convictions after being caught with three dead koalas and 14 dead possums in their car in South Australia.

The court heard police pulled over a utility last February and officers noticed a strong smell of burnt flesh.

In the rear of the vehicle they found two dead adult koalas and a baby koala, along with 14 dead ringtail possums.

The animals had no fur and were charred.

The group's lawyer told the court the four were unaware they were committing an offence, as in refugee camps in Thailand the hunting of animals to supplement the diet was commonplace.

The magistrate expressed confidence the offence arose from a cultural misunderstanding and that the group would not reoffend.

You would think hunting fruit & vegies would be better for your diet dunno mumbling

robplum: Took me five or six months to arrive at the settings i'm using, had most sorted, but two or three because of the extensive built-in menu system i hadn't figured quite right however thankfully i found this page

You might like to google a like page suited to your camera

Most my settings are default however have camera focusing bit bigger area than "spot" have set ISO in one "MySet" at ISO-800 and second saved "MySet" at ISO-640.. Both "MYSet" are set for cloudy day as found 75-300mm had problems with light, rather than focusing, as birds are usually in shaded scrub.

To my mind you need to be able to turn camera on focus and shoot, as birds seldom stay still long. So have features like Tracking turned off as takes camera to long to focus.
I sat around over months taking pictures of items (salt and pepper) on kitchen table trying to get clear photos and although probably not perfect taking lots of pictures as long as subject allows occasionally get good one...one session 50 to 200 photos as birds move, camera moves, all sorts, so need to take heaps, process on computer and delete unwanted...

Thanks for that info.. Robp... the only gratifying thing is that you say it took you a while too to sort out the settings..

I am off to do a shoot next weekend with a semi pro..and I will ask him for some tips... other than that.. I am doing a short course the following weekend , so I am guessing that hopefully I will have sorted it out after that...

Yes, yesterday the exposure was all wrong... and my fault.. I should have checked before I left the house.. never mind..

I am using silkypix as the editing program..

i just use Google Picasa, usually just crop what i want out of the images, either you take good shot, in focus etc or its no good so i just delete.

Takes lots of photos and look through them on your computer, i get photos of birds without knowing what type until on computer.
I really don't think you need fancy software to change images, either you capture or didn't.
Its camera setting that need configuring, then best i got from that web page link, was how to correctly save your settings in MySet, that was the biggest break through with difficulties i was having. From that page got my MySets assigned correctly...the ISO-800 is assigned to the mode Art filter and the ISO-640 is assigned to the Family Timeline mode.

I did things like take picture of pine-cone (just made collage of them) took photos same subject using different ISO settings, which is how come i've save ISO-640 because in my opinion it took good photos with that ISO, the camera on Auto used ISO-2500 but i didn't think it was much good.
