galrads: Next step to making the Obamacare more affordable here is to export it to other free countries.
we have our own that's not working because of insufficient funding . A third of people requiring elective surgery don't get it . Always debate what makes the urgent or elective element of care . People can "go private" and purchase their own care if they wish . Depending where you are and time of the year (flu) urgent means its treated urgently .

I never hear anyone complain, let alone discuss, health care in Russia. I wonder why?
bungallow55: that's what I'm saying, Obamacare will keep Americans
going broke
Ya, but it'll sort of do what it says on the tin which is why some will like it. It'll just come with so many negative side-effects which ultimately outweigh any good it may do.
Not that I'm against govt healthcare on principle. We have our NHS which delivers excellent value for money for first-class care despite being filled with Brits who eat, drink and fight way too much.
Not that I think America could adopt our model. Being a densely populated island is a massive advantage.
I can sum up the problem with no health care for the masses of poor people with a little true story. A couple of years ago my son had a problem with his tonsils requiring him to go to the ER. They looked at his throat and referred him to a throat specialist. He had spent less than 20 minutes with the ER doctor. The hospital sent him a bill for $1400.00. He had recently started a job that was pretty good but hadn't been there long enough to get on their medical ins policy. The whole thing came out of his pocket.
So many people who don't have health insurance or even a regular doctor just go to the ER when they get any little medical issue and they simply don't pay. The hospital then lumps all their revenue and costs together and they just pass on their results to the people who CAN pay which drives up the cost to the paying patient through the roof. It's not fair! The ACA goes a long way to correct this problem. I think as a rule Doctors are a compassionate group but hospitals are a bunch of mercenary SOB's.
