I guess the producers and Sony thought they were on safe ground to take a pot shot at the little melancholy figure of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il when they made their spoof comedy about an assassination attempt on his life. But Sony has had to rethink and decide to retreat after an unknown cyber hacking group called 'Guardians of Peace' (could be a terrorist group, or one kid in his bedroom) has released thousands of confidential email documents which horribly embarrassed Hollywood bigwigs with details of rows, executive pay and inappropriate remarks about African-American casting and President Obama.

Then the Guardians of Peace, losing their apparent moral high ground of non violence declared war on the United States, saying, if the film was shown anywhere in the US there will be trouble, adding, remember 9/11.

So the hacker(s) wins, the film costing Sony $28m will never be shown according to Sony who are presently licking their wounds over the leaked documents.
Is this a sensible response, or a major blow to freedom of speech and creative license? Maybe even the tip of a cyber panic iceberg.

The time was when we could parody anything in this country...it didn't matter who it was. Seems like, ever since 9/11, the entire country has been running away from everything. The terrorists that got the twin towers and the pentagon won the opening battle of the so called war on terror, and the US government and all the states have been jumping through hoops ever since. Because of that paranoia, we have been forced to jump through hoops, and have been stuck with things like the Patriot Act, the DHS, being spied on by our own government, and God knows what all. Now, here is poor little Sony, giving in to a two bit commie dictator who thinks he's one step under Chairman Mao, or whoever the hell it is they look up to over there...and everybody is turning tail to run again. Jesus, I have never seen so many cowards and stupid sheep in my entire life. When the hell are the people going to get up off their asses and start doing something about all of this Bravo Sierra?

At this moment in time nobody seems to know who is behind the hacking, North Korea deny any involvement, although on June 20th North Korean officials call The Interview a symbol of the “desperation” of US society, but an unofficial spokesperson for Kim Jong-un says he’ll probably watch it anyway...laugh

I guess the more worrying aspect of all this is the ease in which such confidential material could be made readily available to anyone who would wish to read it.

On 5th December Journalists began sifting the leaked emails and documents, finding 47,000 social security numbers, credit card and passport details of Sony employees. Quite embarrassing for Sony, not least because the figures reveal striking pay discrepancies between Sony employees of different genders and ethnicities.

Some are suggesting that 'Guardians of Peace' rather than being a terrorist group capable of causing mayhem should the film be released, could more likely be a disgruntled ex Sony employee. Either way, has the security of personal, and corporate information, ever been built on such weak and unstable foundations?

dono about all that , when Saddam sent a hit squad to nail Bush senior after the first Iraq war the threat was taken seriously by G Bush jnr who bombed the place flat for a decade ,making damn sure Saddam got to take a long jump with a short rope round his nek .Threats should not be made against a leader unless they are meant .Cause you can discount this post if you's think it was about installing democracy to Iraq .

We're so short on guardians. giggle

When it comes to entertainment, I tend to agree that "no publicity is bad publicity".

The threat doesn't appear to have any real coherency let alone logical processing so I think it's just someone 'over' thinking things out loud.

If all else fails we can call Guardians of the Galaxy to handle things, so show the movie!

Be safe and stay away from Hollywood then. It's mostly PC breathing, liberal knuckle draggers out there. That aside, cyber espionage/crimes is something new and potentially lethal if our electric grid is messed with.

Imagine if we gave up fossil fuel energy for transportation and primarily use electric cars/trucks and then some hacker takes down a grid or two here; not to mention how clean water supplies, hospitals and food distribution would be also affected.

If that happens, though, we can be thankful that the liberals will be looking out for the hackers well being...... uh oh

But the threat was posted on the highly credible site Pastebin, enough to get any population running scared.

I doubt it was anyway intentional, the repercussions for Sony over the hacking are enormous, and it seems there's lots more to come.
Not for the first time has Sony's cyber security found itself woefully lacking either.

Yeah ... the idle musings of a numbskull can be posted anywhere on the credible incredulous internet. wave

I don't disagree with anyone taking a step back but one's ability to be disturbing to others via online postings has increased exponentially and there is no shortage of those who would take them seriously which feeds into the numbskull, one person, high and mighty army, posting ill conceived and poorly designed threats of destruction and terror.
