Was it just a decision made lightly or did you work extra hard to stay away from tobacco? oh! meant to ask as well, is it a constant battle or are you simply done with that whole scene?
And by the way, good job.

thumbs up

Well, I stopped so when I would be unconscious I would have a better rate of taking in oxygen and professing it. I also figured that it would allow my body to heal better and less risk of infections. Down the line it has been interesting. I notice that urge every so often. At first ( or after about a week) I had a few strange feeling headaches, but that did not last more than a day or two. So this thread obviously did not have any interest and that is ok. I suppose I made it more for myself. A lot of things come down to being your own best friend and even though you may lose people along the way you have to still be strong for yourself. Sometimes if you are fortunate you meet someone that wants to be part of your life and you may even want to let them in. that is rare but it still happens. other than that I guess we decide what we really want to be. Basics we do have choice about, and the more we care about ourselves that other possibility may just arrive as well.

I tried lots of times.

When I did quit(in 2009) it was because I'd had a spontaneous pnuemothorax(my right lung collapsed 40%). Quitting was miserable, but not a struggle that time.

Not smoking was barely an annoyance after the first couple months.

By three months I was happier not smoking than I was smoking. Which is to say any withdrawals/cravings were inconsequential compared to the constant mini withdrawal/craving cycles from smoking.

The only smoking urges I get now happen if I inhale too much second hand smoke. They are very mild, but bothersome enough I don't let people smoke in my vehicles with me.

I don't even get the extreme stress related urges anymore from things like physical injuries, romantic break ups and the like. I think those responses stopped around 18 months in, but where pretty easily manageable by about 6 months.

I stopped smoking when I realised I don't really like it. I never smoked in the house, didn't like my clothes to smell of cigs and after quite a long time of being a smoker I just stopped at once.
Never touched the stuff again. It was pretty easy after all...wine

Personally never started, my Father stopped in one day after forty years, He said if I can make it til after breakfast, I can make it til after lunch, then after dinner, then on, and on. Never smoked again. Lived long. My mother as well smoked like forty years stopped in one day. She went in a tram to a high altitude in Palm Springs, she had trouble breathing. It scared her. She stopped. Lived long. My sister stopped. Not sure how. She as well living, happy, healthy. Great topic. I was an Agricultural major. I learned early on, Smoking is a way the Government controls your money. No thanks.
I heard a year or three ago. Cigarettes are twenty dollars a pack in Australia. WOW ??? Does any one know is this true?

Lolette: My father died of lung cancer due to smoking,, it was discovered on a month of June by November he was gone, and it was like a relief for everyone in in the family seing him agonizing and when he's through, he was skin and bones. Personally never been into it, it's crazy but sometimes my friends said,, it's quite of a distinction when you're puffing one in the office with a cup of coffee,, i tried once but had a headache ,, that was a good thing ,, paradox may seem,, the oldest woman in France, she died at the age of 108 ,, and in good health both mental & physically, when asked what was her secret, one cigarette every after meal, not more ,, i think sometimes it's a question between abusive consumption & moderation, there are those who reasonably smoke and are in good health ,, well , everybody don't have the same endurance. But still more & more died of lung cancer,,

I am very sorry to hear of his suffering and the loss of your father. I know that there are people in this world that do tolerate things more than others. In fact my Great Grandfather Adolph smoked a pipe into his late 90's. I remember in the 60's I was given the large tin of tobacco that we gave him as a gift. I think that I am better off without it but so far I don't have too many issues with others that do it. But then these days it is almost a taboo or borderline illegal, at least here in this area of Oregon. Again I am very sorry for your loss.

I've smoked for 35 years and have only seen a doctor once in the last 20 years for a sports related injury.
The moral of the story is , if you eat healthily , exercise regularly and live a reasonably stress free life then smoking is not as harmful as people make it out to be.

allthegoodnamest,,, you have a good capital, but everybody is not born equal. Some have more resistance and some have lesser,, and maybe hereditary contributes to it too, i think i read somewhere,, if some in your family had been sick of cancer, possibility exist for the rest of the family to have one ,,,

Well,to smoke or not to smoke.Should remind to be a personal Decision !
I smoke for the last 69 years (now am 75 ) Interesting, but in fact I do NOT feel any detrimental health effect ! Actually I've strong believe, that SMOKING enhances my WELL-BEEN.
Therefore,an inevitable question arises ; What the Fu** is wrong with smoking ?!! Yes,but so called 'World health organization " might say ; Smoking-Kills ! " I do not want any substituted drugs. Please, give me a break !!

I enjoyed smoking, especially mornings with coffee. For some reason, it was very comforting to me. My last couple of years of smoking I had cut down, not really on purpose, per se, but because I was at rest much of the time due to my illness, so I wasn't 'up' as many hours as when I was working. It would be a little untrue to say it was for better "health", but it was, after all, anyway. To succinctly answer the question, the "driving" force was that I did it for the money. It has been almost 6 years now, and yes, I do miss it some, but not frequently, and nowhere near enough to go back to it. And, miracle of miracles, my body shows no signs of damage from smoking, even after steady smoking for 12 years, off for almost 14 years, and then smoking steady for another 7 years. I am very, very fortunate.

I believe this is true in many cases. Many smokers have long, full, healthy lives, and many non-smokers are sickly, and develop cancer. There are no guarantees---(but non-smoking is in all probability, the way to bet, as a general rule). I do not condemn smoking, in fact I am a little weary of seeing smokers here being treated like second class citizens. Cigarettes are legal, there are heavy taxes on them, those taxes are used to fund public services and parks, and those public services and parks condemn the people who are paying their bills. There, I said it......it does make me frustrated with stupid legislation, while cars pollute the entire environment, some poor cigarette smoker is treated like he has leprosy or something. It's way wrong.

So here I am in July and still not smoking. I am very glad I stopped before my surgery and I really think it made a difference in my recovery. I am 9 weeks since they had me cut open and have at least another 4 weeks before I can do some of the things that we take for granted like pushing a lawn mower or even digging post holes for a fence. But up until yesterday I had not had a real urge to Light Up but yesterday after a conflict with my sister about our Mother's headstone I could really feel the craving to light up! I did not do it but it is interesting how Strong that urge can be.

I gave up a year ago after a relapse of 2 years. I stopped liking it and the cost is getting prohibitive for something which is killing me.
