Totally agree dj wave

On my first Aus one I took a book to read but never opened it - the landscape changed so often that I was captivated from start to finish, it was like watching a 7 hour nature doco giggle

I adored every minute daydream

It's easier than driving long distances. I do prefer to drive though if it's under 4 hours.

I mainly use it going back and forth from the airport in Germany to either home or work.

Did a overnighter once in a sleep carriage from Munich to Hamburg. Never again, I couldn't sleep, my feet were against the window as the bed was fairly short. laugh

I think it's a good way of travelling in a different country though to see the scenery. conversing

In England the clackety clack has disappeared because of the continuous welded rails. I think my most rememberable trip was on the trans Siberian railway.

Hi Serene wave

My rail journey started when I was a little girl. My father worked on a short line railroad in several different positions. When he was the engineer he would give me a ride on the train. As a little girl I loved it that my daddy was running the train. I heard the wheels turning as we went up the mountain with the wind coming through the window.

When we had steam engines I actually sat where the Fireman was. He was the guy that shoveled coal into the firebox which was the fuel for the engine.

Years later the steam engines were sold and diesel engines came onto the scene. I sat in the cab of the engine only a few feet from where my father was at the controls.

All those years when he was the mechanic for the engines he would come home very late....sometimes after midnight. I waited to hear his car come in the driveway.

My husband also worked at the railroad in the office as the president of the company.

I also worked at the railroad in the office with special hours so I could be home when our daughter got home from school.

When my husband died I stayed at the railroad only a few months. All my relatives that worked there had died.... the new management didn't have "railroad" in his blood. He and I didn't get along so I left the railroad that had given me so much joy when I went for rides on "my daddy's train".
sigh

Seems we have some differing views re train travel conversing

I was referring to journeys for pleasure purposes, not the horrendous daily commute laugh - that, I can understand, would get old really fast lol.

Thank you for your responses so far grin cheers

I do think that rail is an unhurried, relaxing way to travel, if one has the time, remembering that the journey to and from can be just as important and enjoyable as the destination conversing

When I was 18 I took the Merkur (mercury) train from Baden-Baden, Germany in the Black Forest to Copenhagen, Denmark. It followed along the banks of the Rhine River in which you see all the robber baron castles that exacted tolls to the boats on the river including a stop in Heidelberg where you see the famous castle. Then it takes you across the river at Cologne where you see the famous Cathedral which is beautiful. Then in Kiel the train cars went inside what I thought was a big building. I thought it was a customs and immigration place because I thought we were crossing into Denmark. All the people on the train got off so I followed them and went up some stairs. When I got to the top of the stairs I went into this huge room with large windows. Through the windows I saw we were in the middle of an ocean and the aft door was closing, the train cars went onto a huge ferry boat which was a half hour long ride to Denmark. When we got to Copenhagen it was close to midnight and the train past a lot of buildings that a a lighted Carlsberg Beer signs. It past the Tivoli Amusement Park which was closed but all lit up. It had a very nice Dinning Car which was very fancy and looked like it could of been on the Orient Express. It had very nice linens on the tables. The waiter was in a tuxedo and I had pork chops which was very good.

Hello there lady. Interesting and adventurous blog. wave : bouquet

I have enjoyed the most trains in Europe. My best friend of 40 years who lives in CHINA and also in the Philippines and I enjoy our travels through the rails. The most beautiful one is from Geneva to st. Moritz in spring. Then one time also is when we went to Venice from Geneva. Summer, the smell of the country, so beautiful.
Both occasion were with the Bullitt train.

In my country, I took the Amtrak from San Francisco to Seattle and it was most adventurous that I'm planning on taking the whole USA trip. At least before I die.

From Australia I took the ride from Sydney to Newcastle.

Great memories Serene.hug
