tarris: I disagree. Many structures have been built these dimensions and larger. Approximately 450x75x45 feet by most calculations. Remember too, it didn't really need to 'sail' in any direction. It just needed to float
it's the Floating it would have had problems with!
Here is a wiki link about Jubilees. It was discounted for a long time as a fake text, until the discovery of large parts of it in the Dead Sea Scrolls meant it was a lot owner than the folks who didn't like it said.
ooby_dooby: I've been doing a little math involving building a boat the size of the Ark and the the results are mind boggling. Using green Cedar which is probably as close to "Gopher wood" as most experts contend I was able to calculate the size and weight of log which would be needed to construct a boat capable of staying together at sea in even calm water without the bottom buckling or the sides caving in. The beams would need to be a foot thick. In order to get a square beam that size would require a log of 16" diameter and a 20 foot log would weigh 725 lbs. Using a stone Axe (Noah predates even the bronze age) it would take a man about a day to fell a 16" tree and cut it to length and haul it to the build site. One man can't haul a 725 lb log by himself, it would take at least 4 men. At the rate of 1 tree a day just felling the trees would take over 11 years. This doesn't account for the time to sharpen the stone axes or make new handles when they break either. The total weight of the logs (4049 of them) would amount to, wait for it, Two million, nine hundred thirty five thousand, five hundred and twenty five lbs. 2,935,525 lbs. 11 years just to cut down the trees. How long to build a boat that big? What holds the logs together? Glue? Nails? No steel remember? Even if they had nails, what would they hammer them in with, a stone hammer?
I'm going to bed!
Get a grip and read at least 2 translations of the original Sumerian account;( 2 for comparison) Where those crazy Hebrews got the idea to embellish the original version that they basically stole is anyone’s guess which you shall appreciate on reading the original. Strange that they heavily embellished it, but is they didn’t like or understand certain details, they left them out, such as it was specified that it must be able to navigate under water and that was why a pilot was assigned to help navigate the boat. The ‘Biblical’ Noah did not navigate it. It is all spelled out in the original Sumerian which predates the biblical version by at least one thousand years at the very least. The real Sumerian tablets still exist and can be seen.
There is no question the Arc tale, with some great sub plots running through it is one of the two more scientifically interesting stories in the Old Testament. To me of course, the other one is the 2-way radio in the Tabernacle.

are you referring to the 'ark of the covenant'? Yep, damn right, that is a kinda fascinating article. When the Israelites were in the desert a cloud would come down containing the presence f god. It would sit on the tent containing the ark an Moses would speak to God as a man speaks to another man.. But he wouldn't see God as the presence to behold will kill a man. Exodus
jac_the_gripper: Whoa! Where did that leap of logic come from?
There's some big differences between informing/guiding, sending a small child to the naughty step, feeling you can no longer have a relationship with someone because of their actions and genocide.
