In response to: Native British speakers seem to have problems with the letter T for example I've heard many Brits speak the word "better" as Be ah with nary a hint of a T, then I've heard things like "no doubt a bow tit" with a very dominant T sound. Why do you have so much trouble with the letter T?

Funny you say that because I have noticed my American friends have problems with the same letter. In words ending in Ty like party, arty, Marty etc.

Hello Tru, William Holden had stage actor's speech. Back then actors would take elocution, as often as not. Older films have very little colloquial speech unless the characters were gangster types, maids, or street kids like Our Gang (for example).

William Holden grew up in California and his heritage was England. My guess though is that his speech is more due to acting lessons and the proper English (American version) spoken by "people of class" at that time.dunno

Some Ireland slang in English for ye:

What's the craic? = any news or mischief?

I will, yeeeah! (with a pfft) = have no intention of it!

yerra gwan = please do (picture Mrs. Doyle!)

Go 'way! (surprised look) = you're joking! really?

I wouldn't get up on him/her to watch the All Ireland = doesn't fancy him/her at all!

Head on him like a mouldy chip = hungover

I'm dying! = hungover or manflu (basically a few sniffles!)

Funny how things stick with you... I'm a Black Country wench by birth (that won't mean anything unless you're another Brit laugh )

One phrase I can't shake is "round the Wrekin" (The Wrekin being a big hill)

Used in two ways...

Yowm gooin round the Wrekin.... meaning... you're taking a very long time to tell this story! roll eyes

or

Arv bin round the Wrekin... meaning... I got lost on the way here! roll eyes

I get some odd looks using it in conversation in Ireland doh grin

Need a dictionary for cockney rhyming slang and some northern sayings.

Love "chuffing Nora!" "eh up!"

dunno if ye have this in GB
"round the house and mind the dresser, and don't knock over the cat's saucer" = beating round the bush, the long way round.

comes from set dancing terms, when they used to have rambling houses with music and dancing (trad)

think they have/had a term like that for barn dances in America

In S.A..we speak the "Queen's English" better than people in England do..maybe because we aren't influenced by all the slang

Depends on your education. Slang and dialogue don't detract from a basic knowledge.
