yes and no. If you live the states you can usually have an idea of where someone is from.
but people move around a lot too. So a New Yorker might be living in Miami, or a southerner could be living in California so their accent might not match their location
Ocee sounds just like Michigan. you can tell Ima Yank by mine. But sometimes I slip into a more Midwestern accent when I am relaxed or in a hurry. But it is more Kentucky than Michigan because I have lived in SW Ohio for 30 years....

so do we but some sound a lot alike and you almost have to be from there to tell the difference between, Tennessee and S. Carolina, or West Virginia , for example.
