We need to concoct some sort of prize fund for developing medicine and throw away patent law. Create the profit motive incentive for research and development but then you allow the immediate production of generics meaning that you can mass produce medicines at low cost.
But regarding this drug Daraprim which is already a generic and is not composed of rare raw materials why doesn't another entrepreneur simply undercut Turing Pharmaceuticals? How can they sustain this monopoly on an expired patent? Is wealth now so concentrated amongst the few that even the private sector is a de facto monopoly? Where is the competition here?

The laypeople who unimaginatively and non-productively invest in property should forget that, ally together, and launch their own generic drug companies. Municipalities or workers cooperatives could easily replicate this drug, generic is replication anyway, and make a tidy profit for them and a saving for the sick or the taxpayer who pays for the sick.

And you'd get support from some of the big wigs. A number of people in the city(including hedge fund managers)at the heart of capitalism are starting to despair at inequality and the whole neo-liberal project. You've got people writing in the Financial Times arguing against immigration and the impoverishment of the middle and working class which would have been inconceivable a decade or two ago.
A great chunk of the !% who really understand the world are starting to oppose the current system. They're not capitalist fanatics and the real Thatcher/Reagan/Rand greed lovers are the wannabe rich and the insecure middle class.
This is again an error,,, they should protect the pregnant mothers,, decrease in birth while other countries are unlimiting , shortage of it's own/local labor supply would again lead to similar problem Germany is having right now,,

All the 99% need to do is show a little bit of unity, initiative and brainpower - instead of being a bunch of mewling losers - and the segment of the !% who are worried about the way things are going will invest in you.

The problem laypeople have, and particularly liberal laypeople who should instinctively be open to the idea of affordable medicines produced by municipality or cooperative, is their complete absence of technical and practical knowledge and ability.

And their wrongheaded attitude towards the bright and dedicated. I've got a lot of friends in the city and they don't hate you for having an idea or a solution, but the people on here do. The 99% only operate in a series of tribalist whinging cliches and that is why they lose.

Someone wise once said that a crowd is feminine. And it is so true. Like a woman you aim for sympathy and not answers - your hostile to the concept and arrogance of men of ideas and action - and the aim is to gossip and wagon circle. By becoming this knitting circle that hates anything that doesn't think like a knitting circle you lose to your superiors.

it is largely a con. Over here the big HMOs will tell that an annual check up is free....but they will always find something to x-ray or scan or that needs tested no matter how healthy you are....and that costs money. There is no "free"
It's a con to get peeps into the system so they can start draining those banks accounts.
And I hate feeling this way because some of the healthcare professionals I know are truly very caring people. Mostly the nurses and the ladies in the offices who actually deal with the patients. Very caring & genuine
I don't hate the world for the greedy amongst the !%, these are but a fraction of the world, what I hate is the instantly gratifying and submissive 99%.
The problem with setting up worker or locally owned generic drug companies is that it makes today harder and every future day easier. The big pharma route, however, makes today easier and every future day harder. What I hate about the world is that petty, greedy and hopeless spirit pervading our people ever since the boomers which makes society choose the latter and lesser incentive.
your house or your life. But he makes a good point to change how the industry works
On the other hand. cleaner water and hygiene makes toxoplasmosis infections go down? How much pills need to be on standby for massive spreading infections? How close are they to a new treatment that will take you off the market? How many humans invested their life in finding this medicine? Where did the resources come from? if there were grants given, free material, university staff and education, ?
