Grammar and spelling are important because a relationship has to be based in communication, interaction and even text-ing.
When people are not native speakers of any language some mistakes are expected.
A partner Intellectual equal or above, that would be nice.

I'm not sure Molly was referring to those whose first language is not English; I think most comments on this topic (including mine) are regarding English speakers who have the capacity and resources to improve their grammar, spelling, etc but just don't bother.

Serene Even for the ones (like me) that English is not our native Language, we should make an effort to proper writing yet not necessarily as in a dissertation paper.

Absolutely.
Generally, I think non-native speakers are amazing on here. We don't give them enough kudos for writing so well in a 2nd language.
Plus, this topic doesn't only affect English. I am sure speakers of other languages see the same problems in their language.

Good grammar and spelling is important to me and text talk is a total turn off. Ultimately, it's honest, open communication that keeps the conversation and friendship going for me. There's not much else worse than taking the time and making the effort to pay attention to what the other is saying and addressing or touching on what they are saying only to receive a reply from them about the weather or some other unrelated response.
