I have never understood why the British don't just let Ireland have Northern Ireland. It's not really that large of a land mass; the Northern Irish seem to want to be a part of the country of 'Ireland', rather than being governed by England. Maybe I'm just a sympathizer--but I don't want to see violence, etc... for it. I just don't get it. In my view, it would be a win, win for everybody, wouldn't it?

Would you feel different about Great Britain if they had a constitutional republic instead of a monarch w/parliament? Maybe there could be separate states among the islands with a federal government someplace else other than England?

pedro27: the history is a fact with our two countries, its 2016 a 100 years anniversray for our celebrations our famous people died in 1916 for us to serve govering us....Ireland!

I'm talking about the here and now, buddy. You and me are not that different. All of the British isles(which includes Ireland)has more in common with itself than it does with any other country.

I'd even say that people from northern england have more in common with the irish than they do with people from southern england. Everyone knows that people from the south of england all sound like Hugh Grant, wear powdered wigs and speak french at court.

That's true the Northern Irish have been given the opportunity to leave the Uk they don't want to, being propped up by the British economy suits them.

As for Eire, maybe we are all better off with the republic in place.beer

No! The majority of the people of Northern Ireland want it to stay in the UK rather than join with the Republic of Ireland. It's not just a small majority either, it would be about 75% - 25% if a vote was held on it.

We couldn't afford to take it back even if the Prods agreed to a United Ireland (which they won't).

It costs the Brits a couple of billion a year to keep Northern Ireland going and I don't think it's any real asset to them anymore.

Actually things have never been as friendly between ourselves and the British, lots of them live here and vice versa.
