ChesneyChrist: For example if we reduce pension the British elderly can make up the difference by going out to pick crops thus replacing the immigrants they kicked out.

From which there may be unforeseen benefits; the attitude and psychology of old people may change if they felt useful to society and valued by the rest of us rather than despised although we still love them. We may not get Brexit and Trump which we all know are lonely old peoples tantrums for attention.

Scrap the minimum wage and adopt a piece-work system in many basic jobs. You don't get paid for picking apples for an hour you get paid for the number of apples you pick. Without that Brexit old people will turn up and pick 5 apples and spend the rest of the day moaning that there are no Poles to pick the apples and too many young people training to be a doctor when they could be picking apples. That's the mindset we're dealing with from these people who spent half their working life m**turbating on the toilet under the protection of Unions and then took far more off the country than they ever paid in tax - yet somehow still feel hard done by.

That idea should prove popular with the young. A lot of us are now self-employed with no holidays or sick pay and we get paid only for what we actually do. Unlike older people we don't get paid just for turning up and we can use the superior work ethic of the younger generation to break regulatory and rent-seeking behaviours which enabled the older generation live off its laurels and parents inheritance.

The labour market is a disaster and truth is everyone needs some support with the rise of the machines. But we must not continue this situation where we close down schools and hospitals and shred our police force in order to pay for a luxury retirement nobody working and paying tax today will ever enjoy. There has to be some kind of fariness in the social contract or the young will simply shrug the old from its shoulders. Your pension money won't buy anything if the young go on strike and a general strike amongst the young is on the cards.

Britain's youth today have much in common with the young men sent off to the Somme. Obviously a whole epoch nicer but relatively speaking the situation is similar to then in not only the division of Europe and nationalism, but the economic crisis, too. Now 8 years after WWI in 1926 came the general strike and I bet we get something in certain respects similar within 10 years of Brexit before the ultimate crash which brought down liberal capitalism in 1929 and will bring down today's neo-liberal capitalism.

When Boris Johnson promises £350 million a week for the NHS thanks to Brexit this will prove as hollow as David Lloyd George and his promise 100 years ago of "a land fit for heroes" for fighting the first world war.. Your vanity and lust for significance along with the lies and the promises you didn't keep will undo the world in future as it did so in the past.

But seen as it's happy hour I should try and pluck you up and tell you how this is all going to be a good thing in the end - like getting a girl pregnant when you didn't want to. All this suffering and sacrifice will give people a noble spirit although I realise that's an incredibly unfashionable thing to say.

Incredibly someone brought a baby with them to an indoor cinema last night where I was watching 'Geo Storm.'

The baby didn't like to hear the explosions in the movie! frustrated and no one wanted to hear the baby cry either.

galrads: Been wondering, has anyone ever dated someone who was a widow or widower and realized later on that their loss is a gold standard? Did it work out?

Canadian U.S. Civil war monument

"Canada has just unveiled its first monument to the US Civil War. Although we were part of Britain until 1867 and officially neutral, we fought on both sides. About 7,000 Canadians died in the war, which claimed almost 620,000 US lives.

The monument in Cornwall, Ontario, was championed by a Civil War re-enactment group (the Grays and Blues) who raised almost almost $44,000 to build it.

The monument is a simple 3.7-metre black granite obelisk with the bilingual (English/French) inscription "40,000 Canadians enlisted and fought in the American Civil War" and a depiction of a Union soldier and a Confederate soldier shaking hands.

A separate side wall lists the 29 Canadians who won the Medal of Honour, the highest U.S. award for bravery, during the Civil War."
