Apart from psychopaths, or others lacking empathy, anybody is capable of kindness

Kindness feels pity and kindness feels remorse and for the sake of its own inner-wellbeing kind does the right thing. Altruism defines a kind person and kind would sacrifice itself, its own image, and its standing in the community if conscience demanded it. Kind is neither servile nor self-serving, kind is as kind does
Nice may or may not feel pity or remorse and nice has more to do with currying favour and avoiding faux pas. Nice without kind is something people employ when there's something to be got by it or when they're afraid of somebody else. Nice is often servile and self-serving.

Like good manners nice costs you nothing. Kind could cost you everything, even your own life. A kind man would not care if you thought he was a soft coward, he would still step in and save you from a madmen with a knife or die trying.
