I never knew my father, he was taken away by extraterrestrial explorers the week before I was born. On Fathers Day I go into the garden, look up at the sky and say to the the Universe, "hey Universe, send my Pa back to me, will ya?" Apart from one false alarm when a tile fell off the roof and raised my hopes for a second when I heard it hit the ground, I have heard nothing.

I don't know that much about my late father cause he had passed away on my birthday when I was a very very small child. I only have a couple pictures of he and I.After he had passed my late mother was the one who became both mother and father to me.

With help from Richard Marx, Luther Vandross wrote this song shortly after he suffered a stroke that eventually killed him two years later. The song is a tribute to his late father, and very poignant as it was one of Luther's last songs. His father died when he was young, and Luther's most poignant memory of his dad was him dancing in the house with his kids, which is where the idea concept of "Dance With My Father" came from.
