Why?
There’s the classic get out - I love you but I’m not in love with you but it’s much more true to say I don’t love you anymore and I’ve been lying these last few days/weeks/months/years. Why?
I hate it when people break somebody else’s heart and try to evade the guilt on a technicality. If you’re going to hurt people have the courage to acknowledge what you’re doing and the ego to spare to look like a bad guy. You are the bad guy and breaking hearts and leading people on should make you feel bad. I love you but I’m not in love with you is a line which makes baby Jesus cry, Pontius Pilate said it right before they crucified him.

Why?
I was told "I love you" by a partner and he expected me to reply: "I love you, too". I did, but it was too early for me to have such feelings. I think that "I love you" are serious words one should tell only to the person they shared a lot with. Many people (like the man I mentioned) use them when they actually mean: "I like you" or "I'm in love with you". Why?
Words (as well as various romantic gestures) alone don't mean much to me. What matters is how someone treats me in general, how that person makes me feel. I don't need to be told anything, I don't ever need to hear "I love you", if I feel loved.
