MsContessa: It is never better to be loved than love. True Love is reciprocal, it’s a two way relationship. Nobody should settle for less!
I disagree. True love, that is unconditional love, or agape is certainly not reciprocal. Unconditional love needs nothing and expects nothing in return.

ChesneyChrist: Neediness and egotism. If love is selfish it would just be a case of wanting what you can't have and not wanting the best for your loved ones. What's the Bible say? There is no greater love than he who gave his life for his friends. That's the spirit. If you loved me, you'd let me go and that's the difference between love and getting what you want.
When you start out looking for a partner, you have already formed an image of that someone which is unique to everyone. You are drawn to a certain body type. A certain type of personality. A certain intellect. Smoker, druggie, drinker, obese may be out of the equation... you have done this before you even start. When you meet someone you fall for it is because they satisfies many parts of you and you feel happy and complete and that other person is feeling the same within them... selfish is a term used quiet loosely in my post!

Apart from the love between a mother and child, there is no such thing as unconditional love. It is impossible for something to exist without attached conditions.
ChesneyChrist: You'd spend all your time pretending to be something you're not and laughing at jokes that aren't funny if love was selfish. Everything you do or say won't really be you only whatever helps you get your claws in. You're trying to possess that person and fool them into loving you.
Apart from the (pretence) that goes on in the first few weeks of a new relationship, birds and animals do it too.... I think when you love someone you will find their awful jokes, funny, their imperfections, perfect... If you have found that special person then you will make every effort to grow the relationship otherwise they will feel unwanted and move on... hopefully they are feeling the same about you!

You're right, conditionality is the governing law of nature and our existence. Even unconditional love, sometimes referred to as disinterested love is subject to conditionality. The only attached condition for unconditional love to exist is human existence.
