Plenty of people like to read comments but don't feel brave enough to post, or perhaps don't feel that they have anything to say.
And don't forget that even those who do post, don't post something every time they view the thread. I view threads I have contributed to, daily, but if the new replies don't particularly interest me, or I don't feel I have anything more to add, I won't reply.
I have noticed it too. Some threads draw views like flies to sugar... people checking on the latest gossip. I wish the format was more like the blogs where you can just read the latest comments without actually viewing the thread. (Or maybe I am not aware of that function.)
I am also under the suspicion that certain writers are not being banned because of the number of hits they create. The advertisers who support the site don't care about the content, just the numbers...
I haven't found a post preview on here so maybe they see the title and have a look but find the subject boring and so don't bother?
I still haven't figured out how one is notified if someone replied to a thread after you posted on it so don't be surprised if you reply to my comment and I don't respond again
The more popular threads usually have around a 10% views to posts ratio. But of course many of the views could be the same people revisiting the thread.

Yes, I think that is the situation - there is no notification to "replys"... so there is a sense of having to babysit a thread and go back and check it several times. That of course increases the number of hits a page has... and is an incentive for advertisers to buy space.
That's one helluva lotta lurkers ... or surveillance operatives looking over us ?

Members don't come here just to read the threads for their own sake. They come here to glean information about a prospective date who comments on the forums and get clues to their personalities. Toxic Narcissists and scammers also use the forums for this when selecting their next victim. It is easier to get a victim's psychological makeup than just reading their profile. lol. Hence all the views, but no comments.

I feel the need to comment on your post! I'm back on CS after taking a long break (read Ban) I Got a different nickname at that time. I follow a lot of threads, and comment several times. I noticed that freedom of speech is an issue on the Forum. Quite some comments that I posts where removed by the administrators. when I comment on religious issues, political questions that doesn't fit in their minds, my messages have been deleted. ..It's terrible that narrow-minded minds have no broad-minded view of the nature of certain posts, and remove random quality informational comments. For this reason, I try to limit myself to posts only with light- and fleeting comments ... maybe this post will also be removed. In addition, I also notice quite a bit of negativity on posts, people who don't look through the lightness, and take everything too seriously, and respond to it with negative comments. Therefore, I feel rather limited, and I always have the feeling that I've to choose my words carefully. So I understand very well why 'the new blood' hesitate to participate when they read certain negative comments from certain members. Still, I think the Forum is a fun pastime, and I try to put myself above the thought of negativity, and manipulation of administrators ...

New blood is always refreshing. And I agree come on in. The view thing often happens when someone opens a thread and says "Ummm nope haven't got anything I want to contribute to that" the outstanding multiple views gather when there is discord in a thread. Arguing, back biting and stuff like that. It is what we refer to on the highway here as rubber necking. people all seem to want to slow down and take a look at a train wreck happening
