In my experience people with NPD are very hurt and traumatised …

Some wise person once said: Hurt people, hurt people … although not every "hurt person" becomes a narcissist, many very hurt people are … It's a pity because they have beautiful souls and so want to be loved but their human traits most of the time stand between their soul/heart needs and the person who can share that love with them sigh

I read a really well written text by a "recovering narcissist" who was sharing that it was a uphill struggle but only possible because he has an extraordinary girlfriend who calls a spade a spade and won't allow him "his manipulative ways" and he also is in therapy at the same time...

I think it takes an extraordinary person to have a relationship with a narcissist and not be adversely emotionally affected by it angel2

Narcissists are supposedly self-centered individuals who think and act as the world revolves around them. However, defining Narcissism is important since there are different levels. Are they ones bordering on a mental disorder, or are they simply well educated, confident of what they are doing, hard to deal with knowing facts covering all angles, and able to get the work done under pressure forcing a weaker individual to see them in this manner while an altruist waits around not to hurt someone's feelings, usually have opposing views and values with no solid commitments to anyone.

The bottom line in my opinion the best individual for a job or relationship is usually someone who can be somewhat narcissistic while being equally altruistic, yet able to handle each situation differently as needed using intelligence, logic, and humor in stressful times. For example in a hostage situation, you wouldn't want someone who is 100% narcissistic or 100% altruistic... it just won't work. In extreme cases of narcissism or altruism, it's more of an abnormal behavior where it is headed for mental illness in time able to be destructive to yourself or others.

Given this is a dating site, I can't imagine Galrads was asking about professional relationships ...and for some strange reason I also suspect a hostage situation never even crossed his mind either...then again, who knows what goes on in his mind...and yours for that matter.. hostage situation rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

Oh, I agree, I know Gal is not talking about professional relationships and there's no chance in hell he's going to stop a hostage situation... however, his motivation for posting his thread is not as it appears to be, and why I added a few comments that may only be relevant to him. He's antsy because he's not getting the responses he wants and you may have hit a nerve. Oh well... it's only a forum. laugh

Oh if that's the case then we shall have to wait in patient anticipation for Galrad's confirmation..or... the most likely one...denial lol...
