blathin: Really Tom? Who do they mean? That'd certainly make for an interesting, if not good, change for the UK..
I lived under a socialist government in Finland, they had their good points.

tomcatty: Oh, by the way there is a body of thought in the UK that favours a socialist prime minister next time.
Considering the UK was in the EU for so long I think socialism and globalism rubbed off on most conservative politicians also, they're like mini Trumps only less strong and trying to please the left which is a big mistake. Most of your institutions seem leftist and why the migrant issue will probably get worse. If the UK turns full socialist it will be sad and with no recovery possible. As a country just like the US you've lost too much and if Johnson fails it may be your last chance to keep your sovereignty, traditions, laws, way of life, and integrity as a nation. Sharia Law is a great threat to your communities and radical Muslims have no interest to assimilate regardless of where you.

Oh did I, they're good they had me fooled!!!!!

The three Scandinavian countries are constitutional monarchies while Finland and Iceland have been republics since the 20th century. Currently, the Nordic countries are described as being highly democratic and all have a unicameral form of governance and use proportional representation in their electoral systems.

They certainly look after roads and infrastructure, strange thing is they have sirens in case of Russian attack and tested regularly over the TV channels.

I can no longer deal with the stupidity, hatred, and ignorance I see here, there and everywhere. I've cut back my presence on all social media and am content to lose myself in books, music, and streaming services like Hulu and Netflix.

I've met some awesome people through different forums and social media venues and I hope they understand I'm not turning my back on them. However, there are some that make me question why we became friends in the first place. The lack of objectivity and the craziness I see from people I thought were intelligent is scary, depressing, and very enlightening.

It's actually kind of appropriate that today my life has come full circle. The friends that I've loved and trusted for 45 plus years are the ones most in touch with reality and sanity. I really KNOW those people. Many of the rest of you make me sad, scared, and happy that I'm closer to the end than the beginning.

Yeh sure we're all just human Tom , but at least they're willing to try things just to see how they go. I see the likes of Finland (and the Finnish) as being the polar opposite to the likes of the US....

God it must've been really interesting to have lived there..i'd love to do that...well either there or Iceland or Norway...

Selenite: Hi KB!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!

There are people from many walks of life who can be narrow minded, I absolutely agree with you.

None of my examples are generalisations.

They are examples of stances I have observed around me from SOME people and in no way depict most people.

Thank you for taking the time to write your feelings about that particular sentence. I do know some wonderful beautiful devout religious people
I was raised in rural/small town Ireland. Ireland was completely controlled and run by the Catholic church....Everyone was narrow minded and seriously backward. I remember the priests and nuns would sneer at anyone they thought lesser than them..as did the lay peole...

I was lucky in that there was nothing particularly different about me....but I felt sooo sorry for anyone who dared be different. Ireland has grown up a little, but still has a long long way to go especially west of the Shannon...the church was and still is responsible for an awful lot of the backwardness displayed back then..

That kind of deeply insidious behaviour takes generations to remove...so even though the church has lost it's power..it's effects will be felt for generations to come...

After I pushed the send button, I realized I forgot to add this very important sentence....

"Of course, my observation comes from my experiences in my corner of the world, and I do know that religious persecution and narrow mindedness do still exist in various cultures around the world, most unfortunately."

My husband came from Dundalk a border town. Great people.

About 25 years ago I was invited to the Irish Army Officer's summer barbeque in Athlone and the welcome I received was fantastic. Such warmth and true friendship blathin. One of the best evenings I've ever had. The food was great too.grin

Much harm has been done in the name of the catholic religion in certain countries especially line Ireland and Spain for instance.

One of the 10 commandments is "Thou shall not kill" and yet one of the Saints celebrated each year in this Area is "Santiago El Matamoros" (The Maure Killer) because the story goes that he miraculously appeared and intervenes, in aid of the Christians, slaying Maures during their battle to expel them. His statue shows a guy on horse back on its hind legs, holding a sword ready to strike a Maure laying on the floor under the hooves of the horse. The statue is INSIDE wow the church and in one of the church halls.
When I organised an Art Multicultural event a few years back I told them we couldn't have the statue in the Church hall because it wasn't representative of multicultural embracing.... they put it away but brought it back out afterwards laugh

I know a few where I live who are "quick with their tongue" but also some beautiful souls who go to church every day …

It's a small community but I get away with living however I choose "because I grew up and worked abroad" so I'm not expected to know "about their ways" laugh
