Yes, I've debated the opposite to my beliefs and found it to be a fruitful lesson, but I have only done that as an exercise with the other participant fully aware of the exercise.

I also like debating with people who have different opinions because it challenges me. Through researching information and putting a response together I learn and grow. It's not necessary that those I debate with learn and grow, too. It's their choice which is separate from my choice.

If anyone else enjoys, or learns from an argument I propose, that's a bonus.

I know you said earlier that you wished you hadn't started this debate, but I have enjoyed your input (and Sel's). It's pushed me reflect on all sorts of things I otherwise wouldn't have.

You probably ate it all on purpose.

GeneralBeacon: Pre-war depending on where all my relatives lived they either supported democracies, the monarchy, or similar. All ethical and not criminals. Never socialism or communism... so quit assuming or rambling.
maybe you should familiarise yourself with your own countries political history and the impact propoganda had on it...The US were huge fans of communism...and Russia was the golden child..but Russia fell out of the US's favour..so they turned the people against communism...There was even a western, the same western that was used in said propoganda initially for communism then against...

You're political ideals, no matter what they are...aren't your decisoins in the US. Ye are told what to think, ye just can't see it though..Unless of course you knew what to look for and where

Ditto your huge appetite for "stuff" and "status"..ye have been led like sheep to those "ideals"

You do not have a democracy in the US. You get to elect one person. The President. S/he then gets to pick the "team"....

Here we get to pick the team. then the team gets to pick their leader...

Whoa betide any politician who dares to cross the line too far...We Irish have a very strong voice...In the US you have the illusiono of a voice. You dont' have a democracy. you have and always have had only the mere illusion of one....

No assumptions on my part whatsoever....it's all there in your history if you care to peruse it....

Rambling maybe....but who are you to talk.....

Selente...you really seem to know...who get people to talk and talk to you...with maturity and without hate

Hateful mindset... is a very self destructive mindset and a very negative emotion...but kindness and understanding....is a positive mindset to have...if someone is hateful...they bypass any good...that they may have in themselves and go with negativity instead...they let it rule them and control them

It's an oddity to see some on this thread...who talk like they are the virtue of good...but on other threads...say such hateful things and spread so many lies about othersroll eyes

All you have to do...is look at their posting history and you will see...their extremist views...their megalomania and narcissism...it's their way or the highway authoritarian mentalityroll eyes

They try to manipulate others...try to guilt shame...make up lies and do anything underhanded they can think of...cause they must control the discourse and others must agree with themroll eyes

How can you get rational discussion...when they act in such a unproductive way and set out to disrupt...anyone who they don't agree with and want to silence?

One particular woman on this thread...has always played the moral high ground card and claimed everything against her way of thinking is wrong and pure evil

She recently hounded a man on another thread...tried to guilt shame him...manipulate him and control how he thinks...cause she thought he was a pushover and did not know his own mind...I gave him a pep talk and explained...he knows his own mind and also explained...she was trying to corrupt and control the way he thinks...this woman is a bully and very extremist in her political views

I hope this guy returns and understands...that he is as free to speak his mind as anyone else...if people don't like him for it...I would say...they are not worth knowing

Selenite: Sad story … Harsh times indeed … great job by your relatives … my grandfather saved a few people's lives who had been set on fire in a pit …

I suppose humour has a particular quality to it …
The wittiest funniest comments I heard when visiting a mental health ward, from people whose lives were exploded/imploded but such a sense of humour!!
Well, as stated before whether Trump wins or not although I hope he remains president for endless reasons, after the election, more people will be wearing concealed weapons for protecting themselves and reality will finally sink in ( especially if fraud was committed during the election and the unsettled issue of the Biden crime family compromising Joe's office if he takes charge ). It could get pretty ugly and patriots will not kneel or surrender to BLM and ANTIFA.

As for discussing politics on CS, I think it will become a little redundant if it continues creating more hostility, and yet I predict arguments in threads and Blogs will probably grow significantly as some here will never stop. One particular character in Blogs I've been told many times has been here 10 years spewing misinformation and that is one nasty obsession. Personally, the real action will be on American streets, and eventually, people will be forced not to hide also depending on COVID19's direction... in other words, we will all have to make serious changes, and screaming online will be less attractive. I got my own plans of course and so do all of you. Family members and friends have a place in the Isle Of Man and that's where I would like to be.

I know and they never apologize. They just want sympathy and moral support from similar members. Giving advice on proper behavior and being trolls themselves. Man is it funny.

We used to have some really heated debates in college, in the canteen...but never once did anyone ever make a single personal comment...ever and oh boy...did we get heated. Sometimes we'd be standing up waving our arms in the arm we'd be so passionate about it..but no one ever walked back to class feeling insulted or annoyed...Five minutes later we'd be working together the argument forgotten...

The world has changed so much since then. I've since heard college students trying to debate a few times and someone always turned nasty or personal by saying things like "you clearly dont' know what you're talking about..or "are you so stupid that you can't understand" or worse....the art of conversation and passionate debate seems to be dying on it's feet..

This is exactly the problem!

Discussions are about IDEAS, not about people. Old-fashioned forums were anonymous and people used nicknames and avatars. It didn't matter who they were. The ideas they discussed mattered.

That's the reason why - in the past - people could have - for example - a heated political discussion. You read them and think that they would kill each other there. And then - the same participants would meet on a discussion about a new film (for example) and - they agreed there. They didn't drag their political disagreement on the thread about the film. If they had different political opinions, that didn't mean that they had to disagree about everything. And - in the end - those same people would end on some chatting thread and had fun together.

But, that is lost.

Nowadays people simply cannot make the distinction between an opinion and a person, neither when they themselves are concerned nor when others are concerned. They are too attached to their opinions and believe that they define them, as well as others. That's why they react so aggressively when someone challenges their beliefs, tend to call other people all sorts of names, place themselves and others in boxes and get more and more stuck. Instead of always growing, always learning, they are proud that they haven't changed their opinion for 20 years. Rigidity became a sort of virtue.

Old-school discussing is dead. This new way of discussing is more a fight between drunkards in a tavern or gossiping sellers on a market than a real discussion. It's some silly: "You said... You are...".

It's like that everywhere. If you stay on one place for a while - they will drag you into it. It's simply not possible to avoid, because such people dominate discussion boards nowadays. Some participants almost wait for you to say something they can later twist and use against you somewhere else. It's very toxic environment.

Unless you like to fight - it's better to avoid all serious discussions. And I plan to follow my own advice and finish this discussion with discussion about discussing. laugh

From now on - just funny threads and chit-chat! wine
