Americans! doh And their penchant for turning people's minor foibles into some sort of psychiatric illness that makes them the worst of the worst.. ...and then blowing it all completely out of propportion....

Lots of people have used those phrases and mostly in self-defence,.or maybe because they had/have a different perspective and that's just how they saw things, or just simply can't remember having said/done something....that doesn't mean their deliberately trying to play head games with someone...

That's why it's always best to deal with things soon as they crop up...it's fresh in one's memory and it can't be, manipulated, blown out of all proportion, used as a weapon, or turned into something else that..

I thought John Carter brought the term back from Barsoom after he rescued the princess there.

The term "gaslighting" first appeared in print in 1969. The term is derived from the play Gas Light where a manipulative and deceitful husband drives his wife nearly to insanity. It was adapted into the 1940 British film, and the more famous 1944 American remake.

Agreed!!

There are however "degrees" of gaslighting ... and all of it comes under the same umbrella...

And many other pathologies. All show up in varying degrees. But all remain pathologies dunno

Selenite: Psychologists use the term “gaslighting” to refer to a specific type of manipulation where the manipulator is trying to get someone else (or a group of people) to question their own reality, memory or perceptions. And it’s always a serious problem, according to psychologists.
Is that description a reality?

This has happened to me but in a friendship sense, it was the beginning of the end of a years long friendship that I once thought was 2 way street, but had it not been for the gaslighting she started I wouldn't have had the guts to cut off that friendship.

Now I don't see it as a negative to see in a friendship but a good thing to tell you to run from it and don't look back.

As soon as they crop up plus about ten seconds to die down. The heat of the moment exaggerates offences but if you count backwards from ten you can avoid being a false witness. The heat of the moment lays it on thick.

Reality? All you have to do is look in the mirror for reality, and then say softly 'gaslighter.'

Okay, so if I disagree with you on a subject and express my opinon, that's me gaslighting: a psychiatric issue; something patholgical about me?

You calling people names like Jew hater and trying to manipulate me, or others into believing I have psychiatric issues is healthy?

Is that what you're saying, Gal?

jac_the_gripper: Is that description a reality?
That description is pretty much the reality of how people experience it at different degrees in their everyday interaction with people, at work, in friendships or relationships or even in discussions online to a certain degree sometimes.

There are many different subtle or not so subtle ways to try and make people doubt themselves and what they just heard, or read or experienced.

It can be complex or simple ...

It's good to have feedback from everyone on their own experiences of it ... I think

pat8lanips:
Gaslighting... My understanding is it's from the days of gas fired street lighting, where a social underclass had reason to be out and about lighting or putting out streetlights. My guess it's a suspicion thing like the double glazing man (in the UK) or the milkman (here, even though there's been no milkmen in the last 30 or 40 years).

ChesneyChrist: Does the gaslighter believe their version of events or was it all a lie?
In very basic terms, sometimes they're aware and do it purposely. It's a form of control and the lack of ability to admit to ever being wrong and sometimes they do it without realising because they "learnt it" as a way of interacting from people around them ...
