You didn’t even know what the term gaslighting meant a day ago & suddenly you’ve become an expert on the topic . What do you get out of it?

I am assuming a theory is valid and honest, if it's being used by professionals who practice psychology or psychiatry. Although I'm aware that some colleagues may not be of the same school of thought and embrace the same theories.
Some people responded well to Freud's theories and others responded well to Jung. Yet they did not think each other's theories were valid, in spite of the fact they originally worked and researched together.
And I'm saying that a patient/person doesn't need to have a discussion about how the theories came to be discovered to resonate with them and for them to make sense and bring clarity. Although they might become interested and want to investigate later.

QueSera_Sera: This has happened to me but in a friendship sense, it was the beginning of the end of a years long friendship that I once thought was 2 way street, but had it not been for the gaslighting she started I wouldn't have had the guts to cut off that friendship.
Now I don't see it as a negative to see in a friendship but a good thing to tell you to run from it and don't look back.

Gaslighting is prominent in the work place, and I have first hand experience of this. It got ugly because this particular person used all these mind boggling techniques to destabilise people. This said person would then report others to HR and spread gossip amongst others.
When it came down to the crunch, this said person lied and lied that staff had misinterpreted what she said and meant. It was truly shocking. So if anyone has been subject to this kind of behaviour I understand it only too well.

I imagine that the term gaslight has come to prominence because of the internets lack of shared reality. We're all sat here on our own, only in a very minor sense are we connected. The role of shared reality is tiny, ordinarily your way and my way would be moderated by the way. Gaslight comes on because we are all scattered individuals.

In reply to why a non-professional would be able to recognise traits mentioned in a descriptive list but not able to spot "it" as it's happening in order to call out the behaviour is because of the nature and manipulative traits of someone who gaslights which means it might not be immediately apparent until you've been drawn into a pointless "discussions"
