Selenite: That description is pretty much the reality of how people experience it at different degrees in their everyday interaction with people, at work, in friendships or relationships or even in discussions online to a certain degree sometimes.
There are many different subtle or not so subtle ways to try and make people doubt themselves and what they just heard, or read or experienced.

If the description of 'gaslighting' is a reality for you, am I gaslighting you by suggesting the description is a model constructed from empirical observation and not a reality at all?

So I noticed what I perceived as "gaslighting" going on around me and I thought it would be a good subject for discussion so I did a search and copied pasted the parts that corresponded to what I has been observing ... It made more sense to copy information that was written by someone who had at least researched it. And I posted the link!!!
Tell me about the temporal inconsistency? Are you taking about the film?

You are not gaslighting me by suggesting that at all Jac.
Unless in an imaginary scenario you would make a suggestion different from the one you may have suggested the day before and when asked about why the change of mind, you'd reply "what change of mind? I never said such thing yesterday". THAT would be gaslighting particularly if it happened repeatedly! imo.

My point, people using words before finding out what they mean... Copy and paste without reading/understanding, you're likely to not see the obvious errors within.
My understanding of the origins would be late 1800's maybe early 1900's before electric street lights... To suggest it only appeared in the late 60's after a remake of a 40's film/musical seems highly improbable. Maybe the meaning has changed over time, or the context which it's used in, but basically it's a load of cobblers.

I have been familiar with the word gaslighting in a "psychological sense" for quite a while now but had never discussed it in a group!!
The modern meaning has nothing to do with the street gas lighting to which you refer but for sure that's where it happened first!!

Love that movie!! Poor Bella she was on the brink of insanity from the deceptive Paul. Yep, being gaslit on the job probably happens more than we would like to admit or more than we recognize. Within the past month, I was gaslit on the job. I think there is a gray area between lying and being gaslit. For a brief time, you second guess yourself, but then you have the conviction that you know you did something that someone else claims you did not do. The fact that there is some doubt or you start questioning yourself could make one feel that they have been gaslit.
