Her Majesty the Queen has plenty of royal residences up and down the UK, but there are two of them which stand out. Both Balmoral Castle and the Sandringham Estate are privately owned by the monarch making them extra special. All the others are owned by Crown Estates.

I watched a documentary that reckoned it was to do with the stink from human waste. No sanitary facilities at the time.
They moved around from castle to castle so that they could be cleaned.

The facts are that in the middle ages there were many feudal wars and castles were built to protect the Lords and their lands. Around 1500 at a rough estimate,some long gone now though.

Of course the Queen will always be represented but you haven't looked that hard as there is always another person on the back of our notes depending on who has been selected. For instance Alan Turing is the representative of the £50 note.Polymer is used for notes now not paper.
