Its been a few years and I still don't understand it.

A worldwide pandemic hit that sent people into a panic and their first thought was to go buy up all the toilet paper.

Believe it or not, hoarding toilet paper is not new. It appears to be a trend during other disasters and crisis'. During WWII many products were unavailable, and paper was one of them. At that time, bear in mind, there were still many "outhouses", and the go-to products for cleaning oneself were corn cobs (YES) and catalogs. Sometimes large leaves were piled in a corner. So, toilet paper was relatively new on the horizon, and then, bam, it became scarce. During floods and earthquakes and tornadoes, people lug several big packs of toilet paper into the root cellar or lean-to or whatever escape room is provided. It's a fairly common psychological reaction to anxiety caused by tragedy. (I have a year and a half supply, and that's light around here. One neighbor has his mega-motor home filled with it, garage too, and basically in all available cabinets. It's a mystery why this product is hoarded during hard times....)dunno

I don't either, Track. Right now we are going through more crises than ever since Covid hit. We had a baby formula shortage, which was very scary. And now eggs have skyrocketed in price, this is just in California that I know of with the eggs. bunny Easter's going to be a lot different this year. I know that there was an outbreak of Avian Influenza among the chickens so that's one of the reasons. Two of my children have very young chickens and they are not laying in the cold right now. But boy eggs are very high in price. I wonder what's next on the endangered list? confused

What is also a bit strange to think about that if you just go far enough back in time, it din't exist.

"What did we do before toilet paper?

Before the availability of mass produced toilet paper in the mid-1800s, humans had to resort to using what was free and available, even if it didn't provide the most effective (or comfortable) results. Options included rocks, leaves, grass, moss, animal fur, corn cobs, coconut husks, sticks, sand, and sea shells."

Kosovo I thik

"Money soon became worthless. We returned to an exchange. For a tin can of tushonka (think Soviet spam), you could have a woman. (It is hard to speak of it, but it is true.) Most of the women who sold themselves were desperate mothers.

Arms, ammunition, candles, lighters, antibiotics, gasoline, batteries and food. We fought for these things like animals. In these situations, it all changes. Men become monsters. It was disgusting.

Strength was in numbers. A man living alone getting killed and robbed would be just a matter of time, even if he was armed.

Today, me and my family are well-prepared, I am well-armed. I have experience.

3. What knowledge was useful to you in that period?

To imagine the situation a bit better, you should know it was practically a return to the Stone Age.

For example, I had a container of cooking gas. But I did not use it for heat. That would be too expensive! I attached a nozzle to it I made myself and used to fill lighters. Lighters were precious.

If a man brought an empty lighter, I would fill it; and he would give me a tin of food or a candle.

I was a paramedic. In these conditions, my knowledge was my wealth. Be curious and skilled. In these conditions, the ability to fix things is more valuable than gold.

Items and supplies will inevitably run out, but your skills will keep you fed.

I wish to say this: Learn to fix things, shoes or people.

My neighbor, for example, knew how to make kerosene for lamps. He never went hungry.

True dat.

Still wouldn't want to be an EMT.

True story.
The woman I live with worked at a nursing home.
One of the regular salesmen came in.
He dropped to the floor with a heart attack.
The nurses just stood around and did nothing to help him.

Many years ago, early 90's, I was talking to a woman who's husband coached youth hockey.
She stated she had a very hard time dealing with bleeding kids because of the AIDS thing.

Right now I'm terrified at all the disease known and unknown out there. I've read some freaky stuff over the past few years that is NOT Covid or common illness related which targets groups then disappears.
Like that mystery Strep that's killing kids in various countries.
