I used to read books.

I used to read 1 book of an average size a week in Russian. The same size in Swedish or English takes 2 weeks. So it was between 26 and 52 books a year, depending on the language.

If you assume life expectancy of 85 years in Sweden for women and the fact that I started to read at four, then it's 81 years of reading and during this time I can read from 2106 to 4212 books.

That's it.

(Then, cancer runs on the female side of the family and 85...)

And I stopped reading books on 24 feb 2022. I know I'm missing something that's not possible to catch up later.

Time is sieving though the fingers and my books are waiting for me. I want to return and pick you up.

They say that relocating takes 5 years from your life. It is indeed true. They never said that a war takes everything from your life. Your past and your presence.

And your books.

What book would beat a view from a copter showing how the said copter is dropping a kind of deadly munition on a human being? And the said deadly munition is exploding over the head of the said human being? And the said human being is stopping to be alive in the real time while you are watching the sad video?

And the sad human being is an occupant who came to other people's land in order to kill them.

And the said (sad) human being is an occupant who came to other people's land in order to kill them and at the very same time he is your country man.

And you are just there waking at night checking news.

What books can prepare you for that?

I understand. There are horrors in everyone's life weather we see it or not. Granted some are worse than others.

Humanity must move forward no matter what atrocities are around us. A book is not the answer to ending these atrocities, but it is an answer to your own humanity.

I also did a lot of reading. I was in the middle of reading a book but when Covid-19 happened I panicked when told I had to stay in the house. I have lived many years and was never told to be afraid of getting sick by touching something or breathing the air that I breathed everyday. I closed the book and haven't picked it up where I left off. Then the war in Ukraine and I was shocked when I saw buildings bombed leaving elderly people with no home, no food, hardly any life left, very small children with dirty faces clinging to anyone who would hold them.

I have a couple shelves full of authors that I like but still can't get back to them. The shootings in the U.S. has extended into other parts of the world and now I'm not only worried but deeply saddened for how little people think of each other.

The book is still on the table gathering dust.sigh

Too many books and not enough lifetime. I used to sit down and read a book in a couple hours or so. Now lucky to have time to read before bed and a book takes a month. Reading is a way to turn off the brain. Think about a plot that you have no influence or chance of changing it. I write too. Even though I am book crazy, at the same time I wonder why. Why do humans write. And why do I care to read their ideas? In the over all scheme of life, what good is reading fiction. Yet humans have a passion for putting thoughts and ideas on paper for others, dunno

Well... some people are good story tellers, they enjoy it and are generous enough to share their talent. Sometimes it's a gift, sometimes it's a burden.

Then there are graphomania. Quite innocent feature, as you don't have to read their product.

Writing can be therapeutic: it helps to settle down our upset mind.

Why we read? Escapism, craving for knowledge, pastime...

The other week, I listened to a lecture about reading and learned that reading for yourself is actually a relatively new feature. For many hundreds of years there were quite a few literate people and they used to read aloud for others. I never thought about it and now ability to read feels quite precious, not like something given. Should return to using it more often.

A neighbor once told mom she hadnt picked up a book in 7 years. Mom was confused frustrated So that is something to be proud of? My guy cant hold attention in a book. I feel sorry for him. Reading is the best escape their is. For him it is youtube. My dad read even if it was time consuming for him. He learned English as his second language so took time to translate in his mind. But, he still read.

I read a book when I was 10 years old just to see if I could do it. It was "Through Space to Mars" by Roy Rockwood. Over the years I re-read the book about 3 more times. Then one day my mother went through one of her rare cleaning frenzies and threw it out along with a lot of my other treasures which to her was just so much junk.

There are people, who cannot perceive a written word - and it's not unusual. Perhaps, this neighbour, is one of them. Nowadays, you can listen to books and I thing it's a solution of the issue for those people. But of course, there's no solution to those, who prefer to remain ignorant. But it seems, that your guy is looking for information, the form is secondary: if it's Youtube, so be it.

Good for your dad: learning a foreign language, as well as any mind exercise - creates new neuron connection, which, in its turn, is a protective factor against dementia and the like.

My sincere condolences. I am sure, your mother meant her best, as she understood it. hug

I am an emigrant and there's only as much as Aeroflot allowed, that I could take with me when moving to another country. My daughter didn't want to move, there was a conflict, that didn't end well. I meant her best as I understood it. She can have another opinion on the subject.

Perhaps, your mother meant your best, after all.
