is it just me i ask yet again
imagine using you guys as a measuring stickrolling on the floor laughing

anyway yup-its deliberately posted here under current events
and politics, as it is a current and ongoing event
and it involves CS politics
which i am wading into here, not without some forethought.

i am frustrated w/ so much of my time online being eaten up
by seeing what seems an interesting thread title
maybe even posted by someone i feel probably
started an interesting thread-and after the first page or 2
-if it makes it that far, is by the time i get to it
lots and lots of posts between 2 or 3 people
talking about personal business

sigh

im glad people care about each other and make friends here
but i now see the reason its in the forum rules not to do that.

there is a chat room here-or maybe start a thread called
come in and chat- the chat and catch up room?
something-cant it be segregated like the word association threads?
why does it permeate at least half of the threads here?

i find it inconsiderate, frustrating and other stuff...

saying hi how are ya or just a greeting-thats different.

is it just me?confused

uh oh

Topics do go a bit sideways at times - and I am guilty of that.

But do I need to go to a chatroom to say hello to someone? I dunno, the idle chat in the forums is also useful in getting to know someone.

tip hat

rwantin?

i said-like i matter-laugh

saying hi or a greeting is different than some continuous
posting back and forth in a public forum

its against the rulesand definitely a distraction-
seems a rude interruption so often...

if i am standing in the grocery line and get in a conversation w/ someone i have stepped out (aside) and apologized to those waiting... or talk on the phone loudly
and realize i might be disrupting or interrupting
someone else's activity-i apologize-to be polite
and then STOP-because the apology was earnest.

as i remember this behavior is just courteous.
not self centered.

i knew id be misunderstood-grin

moping blues I know what you are talking about.

I'll just add that, for me, the worst case of this is when even the thread starter doesnt have the willigness to carry on a sensible conversation about the question / pondering he initially introduced... It's ok to joke and all that, but at least, if you are going to ask something, if you want to get an oppinion on something, at least give some credit to the people taking the time to put their honest 2 cents into it.

I have been here for 6 months, occasionally popping in to have my say at a subject i find i have something to say. i will say one thing: If i was the kind of person that gets discouraged by this behaviour, i would have long stoped posting in here. However, i do know that there are others, likeminded, who gave up on posting here but are however interested in reading an oppinion about an interesting subject every once an' a while.

i think there may be a few good reasons its a rule

one being it makes possible potential members feel
its not easy to squeeze in-like we all know each other so well
it would be too hard...dunno

glad you hung in

thumbs up

i wonder if everyone knows that anyone can view all threads-
every post whether they are signed in or not-
people can stumble upon the site
and read everything w/o even joining

yes absolutely-
many do not have the fortitude to try or try for long-
but still and all-they might have been fun members-
and everyone has an equal right to be here.

I agree, Rwantin. If you're here to meet people, you could blow a chance by not dropping in a little hello.

rolling on the floor laughing Scraping the barrel came to mind!

I suppose we've all been guilty of it to some extent, but I too get fed up with it when I see an interesting thread title (and poster) and the thread has lost the plot many pages ago. Can't see the wood for the trees then!

It's not just friendly catch up greetings and news that can often send the thread into oblivion, but differences between two people which then escalates, even luring people into the thread just for the argument!

I wish not for you to get me wrong on this: Personally i do not have a problem with all the fun going on. Fun is good. Silly is priceless on most occasions. All i am saying is that it wouldnt hurt if - even just out of respect for the OP - you put your 2 cents in and then you had all the fun you would like.

cool

I know what you mean MF, it can be irritating
at times.
But rather that than the strict regime enforced
on that other site (you know which one i mean),
where saying hi to someone or any kind of chat
is out of the question.
People can be rude or inconsiderate, maybe we
just have to put up with that.
We do, i believe have a great site here and are
left pretty much to interact in many different ways.

Long may it stay like that.

Oh by the way...open your mail

oops...off topicdoh

Look, i'm with you all the way on that,

its a matter of sorting the wheat from
the chaff as far as i am concerned.

People will be people, they sometimes
do their worst, i'd rather sort through
the dross than have strict do's and
dont's.
