mindfful: is it just me i ask yet again
imagine using you guys as a measuring stick

anyway yup-its deliberately posted here under current events
and politics, as it is a current and ongoing event
and it involves CS politics
which i am wading into here, not without some forethought.

i am frustrated w/ so much of my time online being eaten up
by seeing what seems an interesting thread title
maybe even posted by someone i feel probably
started an interesting thread-and after the first page or 2
-if it makes it that far, is by the time i get to it
lots and lots of posts between 2 or 3 people
talking about personal business

im glad people care about each other and make friends here
but i now see the reason its in the forum rules not to do that.

there is a chat room here-or maybe start a thread called
come in and chat- the chat and catch up room?
something-cant it be segregated like the word association threads?
why does it permeate at least half of the threads here?

i find it inconsiderate, frustrating and other stuff...

saying hi how are ya or just a greeting-thats different.

is it just me?

No it is not just you.

I try to limit off topic greeting or comments to one or two posts, or a direct reponse to another poster.

It is quite confusing to come back to a thread which has swelled to ten pages, start at page five which is where I left off last time and not bve able to pick up the "thread" of the conversation.

I remember being really surprised once that one of my poetry threads (!) was still alive only to find there was a personal conversation in progress.sigh

I think that if there was still something to be said regarding a threads's intended topic, nothing should come in the way of it, not even chit chat right???

Who is not guilty of making one 'out of topic ' comment?

What's chit chat anyway? One person may consider a "Hi dear, how's your broken ankle" irrelevant on a thead, others not. Some may consider a "Hi, dear, i like your new pic" irrelevant, others not. Others may be ok accepting comments like that and replying to them, yet find some other form of irrelevance in something someone else said.

Some may even accept a "Hi dear, i heard about your brother and sorry for your loss" 'ok.' but find other comments unworthy of public attention.

We are all different. I won't let it bother me, not that much.

Sometimes I respond to the OP before reading the thread so as to express my spontaneous opinion...then I realise no one is talking about the original topic any more.

Like mindfful, I think a couple of posts away are fine...but not a couple of PAGES. with all the different time zones it gets tough to keep track of a conversation.

I've only dared post 4 posts today and I'm sure 3 of them only said "Hi" to new members

Jan1305: I don't like that either, why do these people think anybody is remotely interested in reading it and why don't they just use private e-mail?

Absolutely!

If two people are going on and on flirting, it's called "get a room"!!! laugh

And if two people are having a conversation as if they just called each other on the phone and are talking about plans, their day, where they are going when they sign off and when they are signing back in, or other personal things....do it through email because that stuff is BORING to other people!!!

It doesn't bother me at all. I like to see people chatting and getting along. If it takes a thread getting jacked, who cares.laugh

What does bother me are people making inconsiderate or rude comments or making threats. Attempts at moderating or telling others that they aren't welcome in "their" thread.

These forums are here to get people chatting, flirting and hopefully meeting others. I'd hate to see anything limit this.applause

as usual things get blown out of proportion
and certain people clamp on to that
as an excuse for their response or defense

it was never about 'hijacks'
it was about filling threads with nooothing and personal conversation

it was about the fact that its a policy as well
we are guests here?

personal stuff that many of us exchange in mails are
posted post after post after post

im not even mentioning that which some might consider
inane conversation-just the conversations-pages long sometimes
as someone mentioned-for pages and pages
when the same people have at least one thread like that/for that
running at the same time.

also people that complain about it in private
and posted here to the opposite? wooow-

thats beyond my understanding.

why when a post is posted in clarity does it always get characterized as something else?

i really didnt even mean to be insulting...
but of course...
