Remembering of course there are some people that suffer with clinical depression disorders that require medications...hydroxytryptamines... Some natural alternatives are actually dangerous fot them to take at the same time as they can disrupt the balance of their serotonin levels so it is always best to be under a physicians guidance.

Bless you for that piece of common sense. I have worked with people with mental illness for many years now and have seen what effects some of the "so caled natural remedies and self help advice" can do to people who are really ill in a chemically imbalanced way and how dangerous that becomes for vulnerable people.
I would advise anyone not properly trained in diagnosing psychiatric illnesses to refer those who need help to the care of those who are qualified to diagnose and treat them.
I have witnessed suicides and worsening of illnesses from ill advised advice.

Some people don't really understand about depression. For example, they may react to a depressed person's low energy with criticism, yelling at the person for acting lazy or not trying harder. Some people mistakenly believe that depression is just an attitude or a mood that a person can shake off. It's not that easy. Doctors who treat depression distinguish between two types of depression. They call the more severe, short-lasting type major depression, and the longer-lasting but less severe form dysthymia. A third form of depression that doctors may diagnose is called adjustment disorder with depressed mood. This diagnosis refers to a depressive reaction to a specific life event (such as a death, divorce, or other loss), when adjusting to the loss takes longer than the normally expected timeframe or is more severe than expected and interferes with the person's daily activities. Bipolar disorder (also sometimes called manic depressive illness) is another depressive condition that involves periods of major depression mixed with periods of mania. Mania is the term for abnormally high mood and extreme bursts of unusual activity or energy.
After your situation is under control, look at some of the alternative therapies and see whether you could use them as a way to reinforce what you are taking. Because of potential interactions, discuss with your physician before you begin taking any herbs.
Yep, crucial I think that people dont mess with their meds without the doctor's input - I said this in my first post yesterday - my second post was relative to S.A.D. but also cautions people to seek medical advice
"People with more serious forms of depression however should not be encouraged to play about with their meds unless it is under medical supervision. This may have very serious consequences. "
I have an old friend who did mess with his meds for years and years, he is now in long term care in a secure unit............... and he wont be getting out - he just got worse and worse and worse over the years and went from winning a prize for the best chopper style motorbike in England - to his current condition.
