We all have what is loosely termed "baggage" from prior experience, failed relationships, etc. that often intrude, when we least expect it, into what we currently would like to accomplish RIGHT NOW.

- I recently found myself falling into old habits because of the past, until I managed to take my own advice this weekend and LIVE in the Present.

So, we often can't make the past disappear in our minds, even though its disappeared in reality.

I have a particular method of visualization to help me through this process, called "Laundry". My question to you is, what do you do with it? Do you rid yourself of dirty laundry, clean the laundry, or let it affect your present and future?

I've gotten rid of a lot of baggage the last few years. A lot of stuff weighing me down that I didn't know I was even carrying. The only way to do it is the same way you clean out your closet. Go through it all, no matter how distasteful, and decide what you want to hang onto, and what needs to go. Some things I had to grieve over before I could let it go.

Once I did all that with the past, I was ready to tackle the present and future. I found things in my present which were still holding me back (read: now ex-husband.) When I left that relationship, I left it all behind. All the grieving was already over, I was ready to find the life that fit me.

I have found that the best way for me to get rid of baggage is to take a long trip. It seems to clear the mind so I can start fresh. Plus , by taking a long trip I know the airlines will loose my baggage, never to be seen again. doh

I find the source of my dirty laundry. Clean it up, and put it back on again. I really don't care what I wear if you catch my drift...as long as I am happy.

The hand of the past can reach into our present and direct our future...scold If it does not make you happy, don't.

Accepting the past and seeing things as they are and not what you want it to be has helped me. Accepting and forgiving is part of it. Forgiving yourself must come first. There is a whole lot more I can add, but that's it for now.

I discard what I don't need. My baggage is not a driving force in all of my decisions, but, in retrospect, I have learned a great deal from it, if that makes any sense. smoking

You need to work on yourself before you can let anyone else into your life. Work on your "baggage" until you get it down to a "carry on" level. wink

thumbs up Good thought. If it's too much to carry yourself, you don't need it! Don't expect someone else to help you carry it. It's not fair to them, and they might have enough of their own.

for me it comes down to this, I dont want to forget the good times and nice things about my past relationship, so I guess i would say filter it. keep the good, put the bad in a different place that you can refer back to so you dont make the same mistakes again, but never let your past dictate your future. live in today, not yesterday.

Remember reading a book before - people who had alot of emotional baggage were made to carry around a suitcase with bricks in it - each time they dealt with part of their past and moved on...they could take a brick out.....so eventually it became easier to carry around their case as did it became easier to get through life! Until one day they had no emotional baggage and no suitcase full of bricks!
