Who are you?

Do you really know who YOU are or do you merely observe what you do and say and think?

Are you the person you portray yourself as?

If you portray yourself as being confident and extrovert is that the real you or are you really trying to overcome low self-esteem and shyness?

If you portray yourself as being very quiet and shy are you really in fact totally confident and feel no need to prove yourself and impress other people?

Who are you?

Do you know?

Do you wish to communicate how you feel about yourself or is this something that is totally private and not, in your opinion, suitable for public debate?

Are we more alike than different inside - or are we as different inside as we appear to others?

Any response would be welcome - whether serious or humerous... that's up to YOU!

Good thread Rusty.

I like to think I am as I portray myself, although I think it is impossibe to portray oneself wholly on a message board.

I think I come across as 'sorted' which I believe I am, I do not take any crap, on a board, on life, yet I have my vulnerabilities like the next person.

I am inside as I am out, I am a warm loving nurturing person, I know that about myself (Yes, I am Lagoona, before you laugh outrageously at that comment)

I am a simple girl at heart, I do not ask for much, just to get home after work, kick my shoes off, arch my feet, curl my toes and enjoy what I have worked hard for, love and support my children and be at peace with myself.

How I feel about myself? I feel ok, I do not have any esteem issues, I learnt to accept who I am, I tried to change for a man that I loved deeply, but I felt I was compromising who I was as a person and that is never good, we cannot change who we are, but we can change our behaviour and that takes alot of work and patience.

I am a creature of habit, I put my car keys where I can find them, my handbag in the same place, I iron my tea towels much to the mirth of many, but I like my tea towels ironed, so what.

I am happy with the way I look, I cannot change that, I will never be a size six, but I am happy being a size twelve, I like what I see in the mirror each morning. Guilt used to get me down about the way that my marriage fell apart, but now I am over that.

So, I think I do know who I am, bubbly, fun, I slot into soceity quite well and I work hard, keep my head down and get on quietly with my life.

Hi Rusty,
I have only posted once, but often read these eu forums, and have read lots of your posts.
Who am I?? Let me introduce ,myself my name is Wendy, alias cavaandchips, hi pleased to meet you.handshake
Do I know who I am, yes most of the time, but when I forget I get down and negative!
I am far more than the person I portray, both good and bad bits!!
Your third and fourth question interests me, because I have always had a theory that the public face that people show to the world, is often the opposite of who they really are, on the inside.
Yes I do know who I am, but still have lots more to learn about myself.
Lastly, I think inside we are all the same.

Peter, there is something I very much want to do.

I love helping people. There is a new career I'd like to take up, but it will mean me hiding my true personality to a certain degree. I need to learn to listen to people better - to understand what makes them tick, and to help them make their dreams come true!

I don't very much care for the handle, but I sincerely would like to be what is called a 'Life Coach'.

I'd love to be a Life Coach specifically for students, but that's not a good idea as students would have difficulty affording to pay my fees.

Most people are only available for telephone appointments of such a confidential nature when they are away from work and back at home; so I have decided to target men and women between the age of 60 and 70 who are retired, have a reasonable income but who feel that their retirement lacks something. It's my job to help them identify that missing something and get it!

My own experiences should help me identify and empathise with clients. I certainly hope so, but if I didn't feel able to get on with a potential client I'd immediately say so, and recommend somebody else.

Wish me luck!

thumbs up

Thank you for your reply. I think we are all different, obviously, but much more alike than I used to think. I read recently that scientists have tried to define 'personality'. They come up with a limited number of traits - something like 170 (still a lot) that they reckon we all have, but to different degrees.

Imagine assigning a value of between 1 and 10 for each of 170 traits for each person - the different combinations would be far greater than the number of bottles of wine I shall ever even dream of drinking (let alone cava... you can't 'Cava' real wine, can you? 'ewwwwwwwwww'! - lol).

Ok, when somebody acts badly (as I just did) you are probably capable of putting yourself in that person's position. Here's an example:

'Why, why, why Delilah?' sung by Tom Jones. The character in the lyrics is about to kill his wife or girlfriend or lover with a knife.... yet many men (and women) sing it with gusto - they can identify with the feelings even if they have never killed anybody or even threatened metaphorically 'I'll kill you if I get my hands on you!'

Thanks again for your thoughts - do you really drink cava? grin

Apart from the head stuff, which I used to occupy myself with and then came to the conclusion that it is much simpler to simply be..........

I feel that I have been three separate entities in this life none of whom bore any relationship to the other.

First there was the Merchant Navy navigator.Travelled the world (and got paid to do it) but not recommended as a career. We used to say that being at sea was like being in prison with the additional risk of drowning laugh roll eyes

Then injuries recieved in a motorbike accident put an end to that applause Thank you fate,it hurt like f#ck but you did me a favour. Too young to stop work at 39 I went back to college and studied for three years and got my City and Guilds as a cabinet maker. Worked as such for some years and thoroughly enjoyed it.Creating with my hands was a totally satisfying experience as opposed to complicated navigational trigonometry.

Then left UK and moved to France. Bought the farmhouse and land.Had my woodworking machines with me. My place was used as a centre for various workshops in alternative living, amongst which were studies in overtone singing (singing two notes at the same time..... think Tibetan monks or Siberian shamen) The teacher brought gongs and Tibetan bowls.First time I ever heard them was in a 10m diameter tipi on my land.I was hooked!

Thus the Gongman was conceived. And after a gestation period of eight years he was finally born! Practice, practice, practice and then practice some more.

Three different people all having used the same body as a vehicle.

Now in Spain with Flower, working together providing sound therapy and spiritual healing.

And if I could do it all again?? I would be a luthier (guitar maker) Imagine creating a beautful instrument for a world class musician and then hearing it played in a virtuoso stylegrin

And then a jam session with the gongs................................

A wonderful, and ongoing, story - thanks for sharing!

I hope flower now tells us about her career/careers before she heard the gentle noises in her head deep in darkest UK .. the gongs were calling to her, she could not resist, etc grin (You were a teacher, weren't you, flower?)

My life had more parts to it than three, but none were particularly satisfying; however I've always had a deep inner belief that once I ecame 'old' and matured things would suddenly come together, my destiny would be revealed to me by Dai Llama-Jones, and I'd be ready at last to become a useful cog in life's ever-changing, never static wheel.

Everything that defines WHO we are starts and finishes in the heart ...

Trouble is most people attempt to define WHO they are or WHO others are with their head, as in - I think therefore I am - the nature of what their brain is capable of "digesting" becoming the milestone of "how academically intelligent/clever" they are or not ... I started understanding a few years ago that "labels" of any kind (job title, medical condition etc) DO NOT DEFINE who people are ...

"Head shrinks" work hard at "sorting out" what goes on in people's minds. If they re-trained as "heart shrinks" and sorted out what goes on in people's hearts helping them to heal the "wounds of the heart", people's emotional intelligence/maturity would improve giving us a gentler society full of people at peace with themselves and others ... The thing is, unlike the mind, the heart is an hostile place for ego!!!!

I think therefore I am I feel therefore I am I love and appreciate myself therefore I am, therefore I am able to love and appreciate others ...
