Rock and roll still lives and thrives, It lives under different names, it dwells in dark dingy pubs where no record company A&R men dare enter, it lives in the souls of those who write music of any form for their own pleasure, not for the pleasure of money, not for the pleasure of fame but for their own love of music, be it electronic, basic 4 piece, or any number of ways, means and methods, it just doesn't live in the charts, where people are thrown together and made to play regurgitated crap that will sell to the sheep like masses
Cruise through myspace sometime, not for the humdrum of meeting people but to stumble across bands/people trying to create a sound that's not mainstream, a sound for themselves, that others hopefully may enjoy as well.
Rock and roll isn't a genre its an ATTITUDE, same as punk is/was an ATTITUDE
Rock and Roll dead!! Never it has just evolved. When you really look at it though it is still the same. One of the greatest was Seger! As you say ship, this is my opinion and that is the one that counts.
But might I suggest you listen to Nickelback, Shinedown, Buckcherry, Ten Years and on the more extreme sides we have Drop Kick Murpheys, Flogging Molly. ( Of course it helps to have a bit of whiskey when listening to the last 2)
shipoker55: yes...a lot of songs of that era were banned...esp. in Philly, where I grew up. The Quakers still controlled the city, then!! BTW...as an afterthought, I may have to amend my thinking of the last R&R band. I might consider Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band as the last great R&R band

Those of us who live in Michigan have always known that Seger is the best.
shipoker55: Personally, I think yes!! Rock is alive and thriving. But I believe rock and roll has died, it may refuse to lay down, but it is dead!!
If you agree with this, what do you think of as the last great R&R act?? I believe R&R died with Creedence Clearwater Revival!! Just my opinion( and the only one that matters to me..LOL)
has it really? rock evolved from rock'n'roll, so the spirit lives on as long as folk are still plugging in & playing electric guitars!
"All around the world Rock and Roll is all they play.....You can hear that Juke box jumpin' all through the night and through the day!"
It will never die It will never fade away. Evolution is a blessing that leaves signs of beginnings and growth tranformations along the way.......Rock and Roll lives on...... The responses to this thread are varifiable proof to its effective aura on an international community!!
friendsfirst: Since on the topic of Michigan,.Don't forget Terrible Ted.
Hiya, FF!
Topic? Michigan?
Anywho... yeah - I actually had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Nugent in concert (Whip Lash Bash) & let me tell you... he ROCKED! Put on an amazing show! Even though I was sooooooo close to the stage that it made me deaf for the rest of the night (literally), I'd do it all over again if I had the chance, in a heart beat...
R&R had a very difficult beginning what with the establishment trying like hell to kill it. Of course the worst thing you can do to stop kids from doing something is to tell them not to do it. Naturally, every attempt to sabotage R&R failled because the harder the adults pushed, the harder the kids resisted. By the time Pat Boone released the Little Richard tune "Tutty Frutty" (which really sucked btw ) and Perry Como came out with "Dungaree Doll" or Kaye Starr released "Rock & Roll Waltz" the battle was over.
I will never forget as long as I live watching the Ed Sullivan show after the Brother Four did their hit "Greenfields" that Ed came out on stage and uttered these words; "Now isn't the a welcome change from the trash of Rock & Roll." That is verbatum btw. What a goddamn hypocrite! This guys ratings went through the roof when he had Elvis Presley and the Beatles on his show not to mention numerous other R&R greats like Fats Dominoe, Little Richard, Buddy Holly etc etc.
