Since being in Russia I've noticed that a few internet sites have been blocked. Only a few, or at least it seems that way, and they are sites that probably aren't of much interest to most people.

I'm not talking about the blocking of US sites that occurred in Georgia for a short time recently.

Does this happen in the Western world?

I don't believe any sites are blocked here...but don't give Bush any ideas!!

I read Al Jazeera everyday, as well as der Spiegal and the India Times. Nothing said in any of them about the U.S. blocking things.

The most recent site blocked for me here was a Russian journalist organisation. I can't remember the name but I'm searching again.

As for the US, I know that a poll made by CNN regarding the justification of the Russian rebuttal in Georgia was removed after Russian sympathisers flooded it with comments, so although sites may not be blocked in the USA, they may well be 'edited' or 'modified'.

It sounds to me since it's a journalism site that the articles are something that does not favour Germany or maybe tells truths that they don't want to get out...who knows...it's obviously an attempt to keep information from people....for whatever reason....wave wine dunno

Over a dozen sites are blocked or closed. Most are 'journalistic web sites' This goes on all the time by everyone save perhaps the Dutch and French. Many 'terrorist' sites are also blocked from access by everyday people but are left open only for the military and security people including 'think tank analysts' the world over.
Never forget, that the military controls the plugs to the entire Internet and does monitor it and can pull out whatever site they or their governments want pulled off the web. The world wide web; Internet was a military invention and all bandwidths are assigned by them for civilians to use...this as always been very clear right from day one of the Internet.

All these shows the the US plan for destabilization of the situation in the region has failed. I do not understand, what did Saakashvili wanted to achieve by his genocide against peaceful people of the South Ossetia

About 40 countries in the world control and block access to certain hosts they find "unsuitable" to their population.

To block sites they need to control the cables, something most countries DO NOT. They are privately owned and controlled by commercial companies.

ARPANET (as a net model, not protocol) that would then be the military grandfather of internet do not reach outside US.

There are instead many sites that block certain countries access to them (as do CS, I understand), a different story all together.

The numbers of blocking countries are not certain, since we can not check what actually goes on everywhere. But tests are made regularly to typical sites from within each country.

I think that in a war situation a private controller company can be ordered to do filtering by law in most countries (my speculation).

My 2 (euro) cents
