I was 17 and married a guy who was 25 and we had only
known each other 2 months. Worked for me for 36 years.
Now I have a grand-daughter who will soon be 17 and say
no way.

I always heard that in dating you divide your age in two (round up odd numbers) and then add 8.
16= 8+8 or 16 being the base
so at 24 you should not go below ((24/2=12)+8=20) 20 years old
and the high range is 32 ((32/2=16)+8=24)
Just numbers really but it does tend to keep people in groups with the most in common. Of course as you get older and wiser you will already look inside to find a person on the same developmental track as yourself so age becomes less of a factor.

Problem is if you're thinking marriage/kids etc. 18 year olds are too young/immature. My friend is 24 always seems to end up dating 18 year olds, and they always leave him for another guy because they are too immature and don't want commitment. Just a thought. I'm 23, and I was in the "single/dating field" again AFTER being married and having a kid. There will be girls your age still available, or getting out of relationships.

Think that 5 years isn't bad age difference but 18 is too young for a permanant relationship. In other words, when you are 26 a 21 year old wouldn't be bad because they have had a few years after high school but 18 is still robbing the cradle. They have no idea what is happening and you are possibly setting yourself up for them leaving you in a few years to catch up on what they missed between 18 and 21.

this is a little ridiculous...
im 19, near 20, and the man i dated for several years before it ended is now 35, thats a 16 year age gap. And it worked well, non of this "Oh well shes only young so she must be completely immature and unreliable".
We shared bills, rent, responsibility. i was working and so was he, the age was never an issue. Other than for the fact that when i needed a little guidence, he was there, and when he needed to let go a little and shift a bit of responsibility so he could enjoy himself, i was there. It was a good balance, and i think you can show one another alot.
It kind of offends me that there is this bloody "taboo" status put on age difference. Alot of "tutting" and "oh it must be wrong.."
However i do agree that there are some people who we're of my age when i moved in with him, that would have fallen at the first hurdle. There are a fair few 17-20 year old girls that would easily pass for children, with their intellet and immaturity
its a number... im sure as hell not going to miss out on something that could potentially be wonderful because the sums dont add up to "socially acceptable".
