"My, Oh My!"

The day has been long but my objectives were all met,
the grapes were all planted, and a new gate got set.
The grass was mowed nicely, the trimming got done,
the moss killer and fertilizer were applied on the run.

This rain, it's been relentless, falling now for weeks,
some say: "cats and dogs", I say: "streams and creeks".
Tis been said this rain's a needed, to satisfy a drought,
a statement that I can question with unbelieving doubt.

Out in many green pastures where only horses did run,
Geese and Mallard ducks now prepare to hatch their young.
This Spring, it's been a doozy, a real drencher that's for sure,
it's been more of a lasting Winter in want of a raining cure.

Still, though wet, I try my best to squeeze in as much as I can,
I've learned that one can't really rely upon any weatherman.
He says: "Blue skies accented with an occasional passing cloud",
So I load my tools and still end up as one of a rain soaked crowd.

If and when a real Springtime decides to come dropping in,
warmth of sun and view of flowers will produce a healthy grin.
My face like that of many others will shine with pure delight,
to see the sights of a rainless day that lasts all thru the night.

Before we know it, Summer's here, temps all hot and steamy,
cooling rain from weeks before will then seem rather dreamy.
One thing remains the same no matter what the weather does,
my load of work will still be there to be done like a bee abuzz.

Come rain or shine, I'll do my best to answer every one's call,
to improve their yards by giving them a landscaper's overhaul.
When the day ends, whether I'm left as one soaking wet or dry,
I'm blessed to hear each paying client whispering "My, Oh My!"

Swade, don't work too hard now okey? And talking about rain. Boy Northern Clifornia, Sonoma County has been doing the same thing. Even where I live now which is very arid and dry is getting its more than fair share of rain lately. I had been hydroplaing on my drive to work. But I love the rain Swade, so I guess we just to soak in it. Thanks for sharing....WW

Thanks Miss Lucy for your very generous remarks! Burning the midnight oil seems to sometimes produce the most fluid thoughts for writing. hug

Windy.... Thanks for your nice words and for taking the time to read my submission. I know what you mean about Bakersfield being an arid part of California. I've been through there a few times. I was born in Fresno. As you say... let's enjoy the rain while we've got it... in a couple of months we'll be wishing it hadn't stopped so soon. Have a great weekend Windy!! hug

Well well well Mr. Fresno man..we were almost neighbors then. Three of my children alllive in the North Bay and I have to go there every other weekend..I take 99 more than highway 5 because of the sceneries and the landscape and, I pass Fresno all the time. Anyway, last night it rained like there is no tomorrow but I don't live in Bakersfield. I only work there. I live in Caliente which is about 51 miles east of the city and we had so much snow lately and it is so beautiful. My pleasure to always read your piece Swade.

Hi Swade

You take the worst that nature can throw at you in your usual 'can do' style - so typical of the pioneering spirit which, happily, is still to be found in The States.

You make light of the incessant rain which has so sorely tried the residents of your neck of the woods.

Being a factually based narrative makes your poem even more worthy of the high praise the ladies have bestowed on you in their replies.

Nice one John...

adjhe... Thank you young lady!! - I wrote this at like 1:00 A.M. after being encouraged by another frequent flyer of the corner to post something new.... The first stanza pretty much summed up what I did get done that day while trying to dodge the continual drops of moistening precipitation. Thanks for your kind words! hug
